30 For 30, And 5: Peterkin's 30 Kills Earns Her Fifth Ivy Player Of Week Honor
October 28, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
Princeton held a 2-1 lead over Penn and a 20-9 advantage in the fourth set, and yet there was plenty of drama late Friday night for the Tiger volleyball team.
It just happened to be the men's team experiencing the majority of it at that point.
While the women were taking care of business en route to their fifth victory in Ivy League play, it was several members of the men's team working at the scoring table who realized just how close junior Kendall Peterkin was to a true milestone in the sport. She had already reached her career high with 28 kills, but there is just something special about 30.
She buried one to the right of Penn libero Emmy Friedler to hit 29, and following a couple of Penn points, she found nearly the exact same spot on the floor for her 30th and final kill of arguably her most dominant performance of the season, which you can see in the highlight package above.
And that's saying something, because she was just named the Ivy League Player of the Week for the fifth time this season.
“Kendall continues to evolve as a player," head coach Sabrina King said. "She is consistently working on all parts of her game, which she will need in order to keep having success as we delve into the second half of Ivy play. She is up for the challenge and is always striving to do better with each competition. I am so impressed with her poise, leadership, and ability to tap into her incredible potential this season."
Peterkin hit .424 and added seven digs and two blocks to her 30-kill showing in a 25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19 win over Penn at Dillon Gym last weekend. The victory keeps Princeton only two matches back of Yale with six matches to go in the league season.
For the first time all season, Peterkin cracked the Top 10 in points per set; she now averages 5.35 per set, ninth-most in the NCAA. She also moved to 13th overall in kills per set (4.63) in the NCAA.
Princeton hits the Empire State this week, beginning Friday night at 7 pm against Columbia. The Tigers will then travel to Ithaca, NY, for a 5 pm match with Cornell Saturday.
