PRINCETON, N.J. (10/30/14) - The ECAC Hockey season gets underway this weekend as the Princeton women's hockey team travels to No. 6 Cornell and Colgate this weekend. Princeton will face Cornell on Friday, Oct. 31 at 3 p.m., and Colgate on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton split its season-opening series at Penn State last weekend, falling 2-1 in the first game before rebounding with a 4-1 victory. The Tigers went 1 for 4 on the power play and killed off seven of eight penalties. Princeton outshot Penn State in both games, 58-35 combined.
Sophomore Kelsey Koelzer currently sits atop the scoring column with three assists and a +4 on-ice rating. Junior Cristin Shanahan tallied two goals, while sophomore Cassidy Tucker has a goal and a helper. Also picking up goals last weekend where juniors Molly Contini and Jaimie McDonell. Junior Kimberly Newell made 32 saves on 35 shots for a .914 save percentage and a 1.52 goals against average.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell opened the season dropping two games at then-ranked No. 3 Boston College last weekend by matching 6-2 scores. The Big Red are ranked No. 8 in this week's USCHO national poll and No. 6 in the USA Today poll. Cornell went 1 for 6 on the power play and was 6 for 9 on the penalty kill. Shots in the series fell 81-45 in the Eagles favor.
Senior Emily Fulton scored twice in the series and added one assist. Classmate Brianne Jenner added a goal and an assist and sophomore Hanna Bunton tallied one goal. Sophomore goaltender Paula Voorheis allowed 12 goals on 81 shots for a .852 save percentage and a 6.00 goals against average.
THE PRINCETON/CORNELL SERIES
Princeton leads the all-time series 41-32-3 since the teams first met in 1980. When playing in Ithaca, the series is even at 17 games apiece. The Big Red have had the advantage as of late, going 10-2-1 since the 2008-09 season. The teams split the regular season last year with Princeton falling 5-4 at home in November followed by a 4-3 win in the regular-season finale at Lynah Rink, which in turn gave Harvard the Ivy League title over Cornell. The Big Red responded with a sweep of the Tigers in the ECAC Quarterfinals the very next weekend, 3-2 and 5-3. Senior Brianna Leahy has six points against the Big Red in eight games, scoring twice and adding four assists. Defender Ali Pankowski has two goals and three assists. Junior Kimberly Newell is 1-5 against Cornell with 181 saves and 22 goals allowed.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Having started the season on October 2, more than a week before Princeton started official practice, Colgate is off to a 2-3 mark. All three losses, to Syracuse, Robert Morris and UConn, were by 2-1 scores. The team also posted a 6-3 win over Robert Morris and most recently topped Providence at home 2-1. Colgate averages 2.20 goals per game and allows 2.00. The power play has gone 4 for 34 and the penalty kill unit has shut down opponents 21 times out of 22 opportunities.
A pair of freshmen and a defender lead the Raiders in scoring. Freshman Megan Sullivan has three goals and one assist, while classmate Shelby Perry has tallied three assists and has scored once. Junior defender Nicole Gass has a team-best four assists. Junior Ashlynne Rando has started in goal in four of the team's five games and is 2-2 with a .922 save percentage and a 2.01 GAA. Senior Brittany Brooks earned the start against Robert Morris in the second game of the two-game series, and made 28 saves on 30 shots.
THE PRINCETON/COLGATE SERIES
Princeton owns a 22-8-3 advantage in the all-time series with Colgate. The Tigers the first meeting in 1980 and went on to go undefeated in the next 16 games. Last year the teams split the series with Princeton winning a 6-2 game at home in November before Colgate earned a 1-0 shutout at home during the season's final regular-season weekend. Senior defender Ali Pankowski has four points in the Cornell series with a goal and three helpers. Junior Kimberly Newell has yet to earn a win over the Raiders, making 50 stops on 58 shots, while senior Ashley Holt is 1-0 with 32 saves on 36 shots.
