BOX SCORE
Princeton had two matches go its way Saturday, and now it is back in control of its own destiny in the Ivy League race. The Tigers swept Cornell 3-0, and now stand one match back of both Harvard and Yale after the Crimson swept the Bulldogs in Ithaca, N.Y.
Freshman Kelly Matthews led Princeton with 11 kills and hit .400, while sophomore Cara Mattaliano had 10 kills and 14 digs for the Tigers. Princeton is now 7-3 in Ivy play, while both Harvard and Yale are 8-2. The Tigers play both teams still, including a showdown with Harvard next Friday night in Dillon Gym; if they win their final four matches, they will be assured at least a share of the Ivy League title.
"I'm so proud of the team," head coach Sabrina King said. "This weekend was an exercise in focus. We are psyched to be in control of our own destiny, and we will have to play our best volleyball of the season when it matters most."
Ivy League kills leader Kendall Peterkin had seven kills and 11 assists, while senior middle Nicole Kincade had six kills, two blocks and two service aces. Sophomore setter Lauren Miller had 34 assists and helped Princeton hit .284 for the match, and she even added five kills on five offensive attacks.
The first two sets were fairly close, though Princeton finished off Cornell before the Big Red could draw even. A Miller kill in the opener gave Princeton a 25-22 win, and after an early rally in the second set, Peterkin opened a 2-0 lead with a kill. The Tigers eliminated all third-set drama immediately, winning 16 of the first 18 points to cruise to victory.
