Princeton Hockey Raises Nearly $6,000 In Fight Against Colon Cancer
November 13, 2014 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton hockey programs, led by the efforts of sophomore Fiona McKenna, ran an event called the Colon Cancer Alliance Fundraiser during last Saturday's women's and men's games at Baker Rink.
"I am very proud of the way our teams came together for a cause that is more important than hockey," McKenna said. "Someday I hope nobody else will have to go through what Christa went through. Maybe we helped bring that day a little closer."
Through a bake sale, a Chuck-A-Puck contest and independent help from parents from the Princeton women's hockey and RIT women's hockey teams, Princeton was able to raise $5,920 on the night.
The date was not chosen randomly.
McKenna, a forward on the women's team, has a former club teammate and close friend named Christa Vuglar, who plays for RIT. The game Saturday between the Princeton Tigers and RIT Tigers was on Nov. 8, 2014, one year to the day that Christa Vuglar's father Bob passed away from colon cancer.
“Since Bob Vuglar's passing, Fiona has been contemplating ways to continue this support and hopefully prevent others from having to encounter the same tragedy and Christa and her family,” said Princeton assistant coach Lee-J Mirasolo. “It's from that desire that this event was born.”
