PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior tri-captain Sydney Kirby has been named the Ivy League field hockey Defensive Player of the Year, joining five other Tigers on the conference's postseason honor roll.
Picking up her fourth All-Ivy honor, Kirby was a unanimous first team selection for the first time in her career. Princeton has now claimed the league's last three Defensive Player of the Year awards with Kirby joining Katie Reinprecht (2012) and Julia Reinprecht (2013) as the Orange and Black's latest winner.
Also earning a spot on the first team was senior Allison Evans. Cat Caro, Annabeth Donovan and Kate Ferrara picked up second-team All-Ivy accolades, while freshman striker Ryan McCarthy received honorable mention recognition.
One of the team's mainstays, Kirby currently leads the Tigers in points (18) with six goals and six assists to her credit. Factoring into the scoring in eight of Princeton's games, she matched a career-high with a pair of tallies against both Virginia (9/7) and Yale (9/27). Dishing out two assists against UConn on Oct. 26 and Penn in the squad's regular season finale, she has collected six points (1G, 4 A) in her last four outings.
An integral part of Princeton's defensive efforts alongside Donovan and Ferrara, Kirby has also helped the Tigers record three shutouts. In 18 contests, the Princeton backline has held opponents to one goal or less in seven outings. Last year's Ivy Co-Rookie of the Year, this marks Donovan's second selection to the all-conference squad. Collecting six points (1G, 4A) as a rookie, the back has dished out four helpers this season. Making her first appearance on the All-Ivy squad, Ferrara also has a pair of assists.
One of the Tigers' most prolific scorers, Evans is tied for the team lead in goals with eight. Netting four scores in her last three appearances, she has upped her career point total to 101, becoming just the ninth player in program history to surpass the 100-point plateau. Garnering All-Ivy praise for the fourth time in her career, Evans currently sits tied for sixth on the Tigers' career charts with 42 goals. Her 59 combined goals and assists are ninth all-time.
Enjoying a solid sophomore campaign, Caro has registered 11 points on four goals and three assists. Factoring into the scoring in six games this season, she found the back of the opposing net against Dartmouth (9/20), American (9/21), Maryland (10/15) and Harvard (10/25). Picking up the third Ivy League Player of the Week award of her career on Sept. 23, she had two goals and an assist in a pair of wins over Dartmouth and American.
Making an immediate impact in her first full season in Orange and Black, McCarthy as appeared in all 18 of the team's games, racking up five goals and two assists. Recording her first collegiate point with an assist against Virginia on Sept. 7, she scored her first career goal against Penn State on Sept. 12. Having a hand in the scoring in six contests, she had a pair of goals in a 4-0 win over Brown on Oct. 18.
