Princeton Falls To Dartmouth In 2014 Season Finale
November 22, 2014 | Football
Dartmouth quarterback Dalyn Williams remains a thorn in Princeton's side. He completed 30 of 35 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Big Green to a 41-10 victory over Princeton in the 2014 season finale for both teams.
Despite the win, Dartmouth was unable to grab a piece of the championship puzzle, as Harvard capped a perfect season with a late touchdown drive in a 31-24 home victory over Yale.
Princeton, the last team to defeat Harvard and the 2013 Ivy League co-champions, finished its season with a 5-5 overall record and a 4-3 mark in the Ivy League. Following the game, head coach Bob Surace thanked his seniors for their extraordinary contributions to the program, though he pointed out that his team needs to take big steps forward before the 2014 season starts.
He was hopeful that Princeton could get a signature victory to cap the 2014 season, but Dartmouth was overwhelming on both sides of the ball. The Big Green opened the game on a perfect 58-yard touchdown strike from Williams to Bo Patterson, the first of three scoring plays by that combination. Patterson added a 38-yard touchdown reception on Dartmouth's first offensive play of the second half, and a 12-yard score early in the fourth quarter that basically clinched the win.
Though his side was unable to quiet the Dartmouth offense, Princeton senior linebacker Mike Zeuli posted one final stellar performance in Orange and Black. He went over the 200-tackle mark for his career with 16 stops, and he added two to his Ivy League-leading tackles for loss total. Sophomore linebacker Rohan Hylton, who figures to be one of Zeuli's key replacements next season, added 10 tackles, while junior cornerback John Hill added nine tackles, including 1.5 for loss, a forced fumble and a breakup.
Freshman Kurt Holuba finished his debut year with the best game of his season, recording eight tackles and two sacks.
Offensively, Princeton couldn't do much after its first drive accounted for a 46-yard field goal by Nolan Bieck. Without tailback DiAndre Atwater, who was injured during the Yale game, Princeton managed only 228 yards of total offense. Sophomore AJ Glass had a career-high 41 yards, while classmate Joe Rhattigan scored the Tigers' lone touchdown.
The senior wide receiver duo of Matt Costello and Connor Kelley both authored the final chapters of their remarkable careers. Costello (6-62) finishes his career third on Princeton's all-time receptions list (154), and he finishes fourth on the all-time receiving yards list (1,721). Kelley (5-36) finishes seventh in receptions (129) and 11th in receiving yards (1,392).
Senior Connor Michelsen completed 18 of 33 passes for 102 yards, while Quinn Epperly, the 2013 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year, added four completions for 23 yards before leaving the game with an injury.
