PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's basketball team improved to 10-0 on the year with a commanding 96-58 victory over Binghamton University at Jadwin Gymnasium.
Already holding the Ivy League women's basketball record for the most consecutive victories to open a season, the Tigers' 10-0 start is now the best in Princeton and the second-best in conference history – men's or women's. The men's program got off to a pair of 9-0 starts in 1914-15 and 1919-20. Penn's 1970-71 team holds the men's record at 28-0.
The Orange and Black's 96 points fell three shy of matching a program record set against Yale on Feb. 10, 2013. The Tigers' total is the most for Princeton since netting 94 against VCU on Mar. 20, 2014.
Scoring all 19 of her points in the first half, Michelle Miller finished 6-for-11 from the field, 4-for-4 from three and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Turning in another efficient outing, Blake Dietrick knocked down eight of her 11 shot attempts, posting 19 points and six assists. With all 13 Tigers who saw action recording a point, Mariah Smith was the only other Princeton player to reach double digits with a career-high 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting.
Trailing 10-5 with just under 16 minutes to play in the first half, Dietrick knocked down a triple from the left wing. After a pair of Imani Watkins free throws, Dietrick went coast-to-coast, laying it in for two to cut the Tiger deficit to 12-10.
Down four after a Sherae Swinson layup, Princeton ripped off a 20-4 run over a span of 4:04. Getting things started, Dietrick found M. Smith down low before hitting a jumper from the left elbow to pull the Tigers even at 14-14.
With the Orange and Black again tied at 16-16, Vanessa Smith scooped up a steal before racing to the other end for a score. After a Swinson bucket, Miller drained a triple before going 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to make it 23-18. Taylor Williams then converted inside before another Miller trey and easy V. Smith bucket on a fastbreak capped off the run.
Snapping a nearly three-minute scoring drought, Jasmine Sina hit a jumper at 8:04. Princeton responded with a 25-12 run to close out the half. Dietrick got the stretch started with a layup at 7:52 before Annie Tarakchian converted a three-point play the old fashioned way to put the home team up 15.
After a Taylor Brown bucket inside of the five-minute mark, Dietrick finished off a three-point play of her own to make it 40-20. On the Tigers' next possession, Miller dialed one in from distance to give Princeton its largest lead of the period.
Heading into the intermission with a 55-32 margin, Princeton shot 60.0 percent (21-35) from the floor and 75.0 percent (6-8) from three. Scoring 50-plus points in a period for the first time since netting 58 second-half points against VCU in last year's WNIT first round game, the Tigers saw nine different players record a point in the opening frame.
Continuing its hot shooting in the second half, Princeton led by as much as 39 with 3:30 remaining in regulation. Hitting 50.0 percent (16-32) of its field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes, the Tigers finished the game shooting 66.7 (10-15) from long distance. With a final margin of 38, it marked the fifth consecutive game in which Princeton held a lead of at least 30 points.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Delaware.
