PRINCETON, N.J. – For the first time in program history, the Princeton University women's basketball team surpassed the 100-point plateau, cruising to a 104-33 victory over Portland State University at Jadwin Gymnasium.
The Tigers' 104 points surpassed the team's previous high of 99 set against Yale on Feb. 10, 2013. Princeton's 71-point margin of victory is the largest under eight-year head coach Courtney Banghart, who picked up her 150th career victory in the process. With a 150-66 overall record, Banghart has the second-most wins in program history, only trailing Joan Kowalik (163). The largest margin of victory in school history is 82 points, set against Barnard on Dec. 8, 1990.
Holding the Vikings to just three points over the first seven-plus minutes, the Tigers built a commanding 21-3 cushion and never looked back. Extending its Ivy League record start to 12-0, the Orange and Black dropped the Vikings to 1-9 on the season.
Also shining on the defensive end, Portland State's 33 points are the lowest Princeton has ever surrendered under Banghart, narrowly edging out the 34-point total it held Cornell to on Feb. 23, 2013. The Tigers' 20 steals are a season-high, falling two short of tying the program mark of 22 set against Rider on Dec. 8, 2009.
Scoring early and often, Princeton netted the game's first 10 points. Amanda Berntsen opened things up with a steal and score before Blake Dietrick knocked down a three from the right wing. The senior then drove into the lane for two before Michelle Miller hit a triple from the left side.
Putting Portland State on the board, Lauren Holt connected on a trey from the right baseline at 16:22. Coming right back the Tigers responded with an 11-0 run. Following a timeout, Taylor Williams converted on the low block before Annie Tarakchian drained a three-pointer from the top of the key.
Getting out in transition, Berntsen laid in another easy two before consecutive Dietrick buckets on the fastbreak staked Princeton to a 21-3 edge. Up 25-7 after a Leslie Robinson layup at 10:05, the Tigers closed out the half on a 22-10 run.
Taking a 40-point lead into the intermission, Princeton shot a blistering 60.5 percent (23-38) from the floor and 75.0 percent (6-8) from long distance. Connecting on just 25.0 percent (6-24) of its field goal attempts and 14.3 percent (1-7) of its triples, Portland State managed just 17 points.
Continuing the onslaught in the second half, the Tigers hit 55.6 percent of their shots (20-36) and 44.4 percent (4-9) of their three-pointers. Netting 16 points, the Vikings were 6-for-26 (23.1 percent) from the field in the final 20 minutes, which included an 0-for-8 clip from long distance. Portland State's 16 points were the fewest Princeton has surrendered in a half since it held Columbia to 16 in the second period of a 70-41 victory on Feb. 7, 2014.
Posting her third double-double of the season, Tarakchian finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds in just 19 minutes. Dietrick and Berntsen each netted 14 points, while combining for 13 helpers and seven steals. Berntsen's five steals matched a career-high set earlier this season against Drexel. With 12 of the 13 Tigers who saw action recording a point, Miller was the only other Princeton player to finish in double figures with 12.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, Dec. 21 at in-state rival Monmouth.
