VIDEO HIGLIGHTSBRONX, N.Y. – Blake Dietrick netted a game-high 27 points as the Princeton University women's basketball team extended its Ivy League record start to 14-0 with a 64-51 victory over the University of Hartford at the Fordham Holiday Classic.
Improving to 2-0 all-time against the Hawks, the Tigers will face the host Rams in tomorrow's championship game slated for 3:30 p.m. Hartford will square off with Savannah State in the consolation game slated for 1 p.m.
Finishing one-point shy of matching her career-high of 28, Dietrick was an efficient 10-for-13 from the floor and 3-for-5 from three. Pulling down four rebounds, the senior co-captain also dished out three assists and had two steals in 27 minutes of action.
Michelle Miller chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds, while Amanda Berntsen finished with eight points, three assists and two steals. Annie Tarakchian had six points on 3-for-4 shooting with five boards.
Netting six of the game's first 10 points, Berntsen helped stake the Tigers to an early 8-2 lead with a layup at 16:50. Battling back, the Hawks pieced together a 5-2 run, pulling within three on a Shanise Bultron triple at 15:19.
Holding Hartford scoreless for the next four-plus minutes, the Tigers netted 12 unanswered to build a 15-point cushion. Taylor Williams got the stretch started with back-to-back layups coming out of a media timeout before Dietrick got out in transition for an easy two. After knocking down a triple, Dietrick then completed a three-point play the old-fashioned way to put Princeton up, 22-7.
Looking to keep pace, Hartford netted the game's next seven points, trimming the deficit to eight on a Cherelle Moore basket at 9:44. Controlling the remainder of the half, the Tigers scored 23 of the frame's final 29 points.
Putting the brakes on the Hawks' spurt, Vanessa Smith and Miller drove the lane for consecutive layups to make it 26-14. With the Orange and Black later up 11 with just over five minutes remaining in the period, Dietrick netted seven straight points to stretch the margin to 34-16.
After a Tarakchian layup, Miller came up with the next five points. Snapping a 4:15 Hartford scoring drought, Darby Lee converted down low, but Princeton netted four of the half's final six points, with Dietrick knocking down a pull-up jumper from the right elbow at the buzzer to make it 45-20.
Hoping to cut into the Tiger lead, the Hawks opened the second period on a 7-2 run. Still down 20 at 54-34, Hartford strung together six straight points to pull within 14 on a Morgan Lumb layup with less than eight minutes remaining. Holding the surging Hawks at bay, Kenya Holland buried a triple on Princeton's next possession before a Dietrick free throw with 6:23 on the clock put the Tigers back up 58-40.
After shooting 59.4 percent (19-32) in the first half, Princeton knocked down just 26.1 percent (6-23) of its field goal attempts following the intermission. Hitting just 25.0 percent (5-20) of its three-pointers, Hartford shot 40.0 percent (20-50) for the game, which included a 57.1 percent (12-21) clip over the final 20 minutes.
