Tennis Teams to Tackle Weekend of Fellow Ranked Opponents
March 04, 2014 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
Both Princeton's men's and women's tennis teams are included in this week's ITA rankings, and both will take on ranked opponents this weekend.
The Tigers and Buckeyes have met before, but not in a long, long time. Princeton picked up wins in 1976 and 1978 against Ohio State, and Saturday's meeting will break a 36-year hiatus in the series. The Tigers are on a five-match win streak that is their longest since 2010, when Princeton won 10 in a row straight through the Ivy League season. That win streak started with a win over another Big Ten team, Penn State, the second of three consecutive wins over Big Ten teams that Princeton will bring into Saturday's match.
Princeton's men have faced Denver just twice, in 2010 and 2011, both on neutral courts and both Denver wins. The Tigers will have at least five different doubles and five different singles players than their last match against the Pioneers in 2011.
Princeton is 20-6 all-time against Penn State, but the Nittany Lions have won six of the last eight after Princeton won the first 18 times through 1997. The Tigers will have at least five different doubles players and four different singles players from the teams' last meeting in 2012, a 4-3 Penn State win in State College. The Tigers won the teams' last meeting in Princeton, 4-3 in 2011.
