Fifth-Ranked Yale Uses Early Speed To Top No. 4 Heavies, Win Carnegie Cup

Yale used a strong start on Lake Carnegie to build an advantage of about a length over Princeton in the varsity eight race. It was reminiscent of last week's loss to third-ranked Harvard, when the Tigers found themselves down big and fought back to within a couple seats.
There was fight again Saturday, but there was minimal rally. The Tigers may have cut into the lead by a couple of seats, but Yale still held on for a three-second win in 6:00.9.
"We did have a good late push against Harvard and I felt that today we got good traction in the last 1000 as well," sophomore Pat Eble said. "We know we have a good last half of the race and it is now a matter of finding our own speed and rhythm in the first 1000. We didn't get flustered but it was a bit too much to make up today."
Princeton defeated Cornell in a time of 6:03.9, while the Big Red took third in 6:08.7.
"The past two weeks we have been down a bit off of the start to two very strong crews," Eble said. "These crews dictated their rhythm and we need to do a better job of locking in to our own boat and really pushing together."
Each boat took at least one race during the regatta. The Princeton 2V bounced back from a close loss to Harvard last weekend to defeat Yale by more than six seconds (6:13.5), while the Cornell 3V topped Princeton by just over three seconds. Cornell also picked up a 4V win over the Tigers.
Princeton will complete its regular season next Saturday against sixth-ranked Brown in the annual Content Cup regatta. For the Tigers, it will be their fourth opponent ranked inside the Top 7 in a three-week stretch, and their fifth Top 10 opponent of the season.
Considering the close margins in both Princeton's races, as well as other races throughout the East, it could come down to a furious multiple-boat sprint for the 2014 EARC Championship on May 18.
"Eastern Sprints this year will be extremely close and I can definitely see it coming down to four or five crews in the last 500 of that race," Eble said. "I think we just need to stay positive and stay focused on getting better every day. We have a tough race next weekend against Brown and that will be another huge test. Leading up to Sprints we need to simply come down to the boathouse every day ready to push ourselves to get better and speed will follow."
