Peterkin Repeats As Ivy Player Of The Week After Delaware Invite MVP Honors
September 16, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
Two weeks, two Ivy League honors for Kendall Peterkin.
The junior rightside from San Diego, Calif., led the Tigers to the 2014 Delaware Invitational Championship last weekend; she averaged 4.4 kills and 3.1 digs per set to help the Tigers to 3-2 comeback wins over George Mason and Delaware, as well as a 3-1 victory over Manhattan.
“Kendall is really coming into her own,” head coach Sabrina King said. “Right now, she is our go-to hitter, and she has really taken ownership of that role. She played great the whole weekend in Delaware, and we continue to expect big things from here.”
Peterkin, who has ranked among the Ivy League top three in both kills and points every season of her career, alternated between the left and right sides last season. King has kept her on her more natural right side this season, and Peterkin feels that she can excel in that role.
"I came into this season unsure about my position, but I felt confident that I could contribute from wherever Coach asked me to play," Peterkin said after the weekend sweep. "There's something about the right side that makes me feel in my element and I think the experience I've had there has helped me to improve my shots and learn my limitations. We have great chemistry this season and that has really been a huge factor in our success so far."
Her success can be seen at both the league and national levels. Peterkin ranks first in the Ivy League and 14th nationally in points per set (5.07), and she ranks first in the Ivy League and 20th nationally in kills per set (4.41). She has added at least four blocks in three of Princeton's last four matches, and she has seven service aces on the season.
Teammates Sarah Daschbach and Lauren Miller joined Peterkin on the all-tournament team after Princeton recorded its first tournament sweep since 2010. Princeton rallied from 2-1 deficits against both George Mason and Delaware, then came back the next morning and completed the perfect weekend in four sets against the Jaspers.
“It was a great test, winning two very different five-set matches,” King said. “The Manhattan match was a very tough one as well, coming back from a physically and emotionally tough Friday. The team showed a lot of grit, and I hope we can build off that this weekend when we face several challenges at Rutgers.”
Princeton will compete four times at the Rutgers Invitational, beginning Friday at 9:30 am against American University.
