PRINCETON, N.J. (1/1/15) - The Princeton women's hockey team resumes action this weekend when it travels to Rensselaer and Union. In the first games of 2015, the Tigers will face Rensselaer on Friday, Jan. 2 and Union on Saturday, Jan. 3 with both games starting at 3 p.m.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
After receiving votes in both national polls in November, Princeton reached the toughest portion of its schedule and faced five consecutive top-10 opponents. It was then that the Tigers hit a 0-5 slump after starting the season, 6-1-1. The Tigers rebounded in the final game of 2014, a 5-2 win at Dartmouth. Princeton is 7-7-1 overall and is fifth in the ECAC standings with a 5-4 record. Three players are in double digits in scoring, led by sophomore defender Kelsey Koelzer. Koelzer has a team-high 11 assists and has scored five goals for 16 points. Sophomore Molly Contini and junior Jaimie McDonell have 13 points with Contini scoring a team-best six goals. Sophomore Hilary Lloyd and freshman Kiersten Falck chip in nine points apiece. Junior Kimberly Newell has played in all but one game this season in goal and has a 6-7-1 record. She has a .919 save percentage and a 2.50 goals against average.
PRINCETON/RENSSELAER SERIES
Princeton holds a 10-5-4 edge in the all-time series with Rensselaer and won the first meeting this year, a 2-1 overtime game at Hobey Baker Rink. It was Princeton's fourth consecutive overtime game. Rensselaer has won just once at Houston Field House in the series, the first game in 2007. Princeton has gone 4-0-3 in Troy ever since. Cristin Shanahan tallied the game winner at 2:18 in overtime as Princeton held a 29-21 shot advantage.
SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
Rensselaer returns to the ice with a 3-12-2 overall record. The Engineers are 1-5 in the league to sit in a four-way tie for ninth place in the ECAC standings. The last time out, Rensselaer topped Brown in a 7-5 game before falling 3-2 to Yale. Junior Alexa Gruschow has 12 points with six goals and six assists. Sophomore Laura Horwood and senior Taylor Mahoney have 10 points each. Horwood has five goals and five assists, while Mahoney is the team leader in assists with eight to add to her two goals. Seniors Ali Svoboda and Kathryn Schilter add nine and eight points, respectively. Seniors Kelly O'Brien and Brianna Piper have split time in net O'Brien is 2-7 with a .901 save percentage and a 3.23 GAA. Piper is 1-5-2 with an .886 save percentage and a 3.32 GAA. It was O'Brien who was in net for the first game of the series this year.
PRINCETON/UNION SERIES
Princeton suffered its first defeat to Union last year, in the 10-year series history. The Tigers are 20-1-1 in the series but haven't won at Messa Rink since the 2011-12 season. A 1-1 tie and a 2-1 loss followed. Earlier this year Princeton won a 3-2 game in overtime at Hobey Baker Rink. It was Molly Contini that scored the golden goal at 2:47. Haley Welch tied the game with an extra-attacker goal with 34 seconds remaining in the third period. Princeton outshot Union 37-22.
SCOUTING THE DUTCHWOMEN
Union comes back from break riding a three-game unbeaten streak and a 3-1-1 record on its last five games. The Dutchwomen are 4-11-3 overall and 1-5 in the ECAC to sit in a four-way tie for ninth place in the standings. Despite missing five games because of an injury, junior Jessica Kaminsky leads her team in scoring with two goals and eight helpers for 10 points. Classmate Kathryn Tomaselli has scored the most goals on her team, five, and adds four assists for nine points. Senior defender Alex Tancrell-Fontaine has eight points and defender Kathryn Davis has six. Shenae Lundberg is the only netminder utilized by Union.
