The Ivy League has been as tightly packed as it's been in several years. No team made it through the first half unscathed, and six of the eight teams are within two matches of each other at either 5-2 (Harvard, Yale) or 3-4 (Princeton, Penn, Brown and Columbia).
Dartmouth currently holds the top spot at 6-1, but the Big Green host the reigning Ivy co-champ Crimson Saturday. Wins by both Princeton and Harvard would leave the Tigers only two out with six to go in the tightly packed league race.
Head coach Sabrina King is less focused on the standings and more interested in her team's performance against the Quakers, who opened the Ivy League season with a 3-1 victory over the Tigers at Dillon Gym. A tight 26-24 fourth set went to Penn, which had a more balanced offensive attack than the Tigers that September evening.
Since then, King has seen her squad develop greater balance, thanks in part to the gained experience and confidence from a couple of younger players. Freshman opposite Brittany Smith had a career-high 11 kills in a win over Brown last weekend, and that topped her high of eight, set the previous weekend in a win over Columbia.
Meanwhile, classmate Claire Nussbaum has also grown more confident as one of the Tigers' setters. She had 33 assists in the 3-2 road win over Brown, and she has become one of the team's top serving options during the Ivy League season.
It isn't all about the youth, though. Senior Kendall Peterkin is making her final run through the Ivy League, and she currently ranks 10th all-time at Princeton with 1141 kills. She is currently fifth in the league with 3.17 kills per set. Penn's Alexis Genske is just behind Peterkin, averaging 3.16 kills per set.
