BOX SCORE
Despite a career day by senior wideout Isaiah Barnes, who caught six passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns — including a spectacular leaping grab late in the third quarter — the Princeton football team dropped its home finale 35-28 to Yale Saturday in front of 11,623 at Princeton Stadium.
The loss ended Princeton's drive for its first perfect home season since 2006, as well as its second winning season since that same season. The Tigers will have one more opportunity at picking up their sixth win next weekend, and it would have to come at the expense of Dartmouth's attempt to win an Ivy League championship (Nov. 21, 12 pm, ASN/ILDN).
Princeton, which raced out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and led with under five minutes remaining, got several strong individual performances, but it could not put them together for the victory. Barnes caught touchdown passes of 18 and 53 yards, with the latter coming off a leaping grab down the Yale sideline; after a spectacular mid-air catch, he was able to maintain balance and run the rest of the way untouched to open a 28-24 lead.
Yale took the ball on its ensuing drive and kicked a 34-yard field goal to cut the deficit to one point, and then it picked off Chad Kanoff with 8:18 remaining to set up its go-ahead score. Morgan Roberts found Robert Clemons over the middle for a 19-yard touchdown, and then he hit Jackson Stallings for a two-point conversion.
Princeton had one more opportunity to tie it, but Darius Manora picked off a fourth-down pass near midfield, and Yale ran the rest of the clock out to seal the win.
Kanoff completed 25 of 42 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Senior DiAndre Atwater, who missed the last five games after an early injury in the victory over Columbia, rushed 12 times for 52 yards, including a four-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Both Seth DeValve and Scott Carpenter had five catches apiece, while Trevor Osborne caught a three-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.
Both Dorian Williams and Luke Catarius led the defense with 15 tackles apiece, while Catarius added a key breakup that saved a touchdown during the fourth quarter. Senior Matt Arends added 10 tackles, including one for loss, while Brannon Jones, Birk Olson and Mike Wagner were each involved in sacks.
Senior Anthony Gaffney looked like he would have one of the biggest plays in the game, a strip and return for a touchdown, but the runner was ruled to have forward motion stopped before the ball came out.
