SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 16th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team saw its 2015 season come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to No. 2 Syracuse University in NCAA Quarterfinal action at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
With the loss, the Tigers close out their campaign with an 11-7 overall record. Extending its win streak over Princeton to six games, the Orange improved to 19-1 on the season and punched their ticket to a third NCAA Semifinal in four years.
Taking possession in the early going, Ryan McCarthy played a long hit from the right side toward the cage. Maddie Copeland redirected the shot, forcing a Jess Jecko save. Inserting the game's first penalty corner, Copeland played the ball to the top of the circle to Teresa Benvenuti, who tested Jecko with another shot-on-goal at 2:07.
Breaking out of its defensive zone, Syracuse caught Princeton on a counter in the fourth minute. Pushing forward, Serra Degnan played a ball to Liz Sack in the middle of the circle. Quickly looking to goal, Sack ripped a shot into the right side of the cage to give the Orange an early advantage.
Princeton nearly netted the equalizer in the 10th minute as Sophia Tornetta sent a shot just wide of the right post. Capitalizing on the missed opportunity, Sack struck again at 14:57. Alma Fenne got the play started with a hit into the circle that Sack redirected into the bottom left corner of the Tigers' goal. In the 28th minute, Fenne came forward with numbers and padded the cushion, firing a low shot past Anya Gersoff to make it 3-0.
Outshooting Princeton 14-3 over the first 35 minutes, Syracuse added to its lead early in the second half. Taking a restart at midfield, Roos Weers sent a long ball to Fenne at the edge of the circle. All alone with Gersoff, Fenne put another low shot on target, making it 4-0 at 37:42. Emma Russell capped off the scoring in the 54th minute with her 13th goal of the season.
Under pressure for the majority of the afternoon, Gersoff posted her fourth double-digit save effort of the season with 13 stops. Syracuse finished with a 28-6 shot advantage and an 11-2 edge in penalty corners.
