Playing its first game in Dillon Gym since January 11, 1969, the Princeton men's basketball team knocked off its second straight Metro Atlantic opponent Saturday night, defeating Saint Peter's, 75-72.
Dillon Gym was the program's home from 1947-69 before Jadwin debuted on January 25, 1969.
Princeton never trailed in front of the sold-out crowd of 1,306, but the Tigers' largest lead was just nine points in a game that remained within reach for Saint Peter's until the end. Princeton shot just 52.6 percent from the free-throw line, hitting 20 of 38 while going to the stripe twice as often as the Peacocks, who were 12 of 19.
Henry Caruso had a career-high 23 points in the win, while Amir Bell had 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Princeton scored the game's first five points and led by as many as eight in the first half, though Saint Peter's whittled the deficit to just three points at the break.
An Amir Bell 3-pointer gave Princeton its largest lead at 56-47 with 11 minutes left, but the Peacocks kept the Tigers close and had the deficit down to two after a Cameron Jones 3-pointer with 57 seconds to go. Jones poured in 21 to lead the Peacocks, while Antwon Portley added 20 and Quadir Welton 14. Elisha Boone had a game-high 11 rebounds for the visitors.
After Saint Peter's pulled to within 69-67 on the Jones 3, Princeton went 6 of 10 from the line to keep the door open for the peacocks, who trailed by two points on four occasions in the final minute but never closed the gap.
Princeton will return to Jadwin Gym Wednesday with a 7 p.m. tip against Lafayette. All fans will receive a 2015-16 schedule cup.
