PRINCETON, N.J. (2/14/15) - If you thought the Princeton men's hockey team was going to be an easy out in the upcoming ECAC playoffs, refer back to the events of this weekend.
Princeton took on two teams who are very likely going to be playing their first ECAC playoff games at home, one of whom is a lock for a top four seed and a bye and another in the mix for one of those coveted spots. And what did Princeton do?
The Tigers tied St. Lawrence - that's second-place St. Lawrence - 1–1 in front of 1,790 at Baker Rink Saturday night, one night after knocking off Clarkson - that's sixth-place Clarkson - 2–1 Friday night.
For Princeton, it was a three-point weekend after the Tigers had three ECAC points in their first 16 ECAC games. The weekend was mostly a sign that the Tigers aren't giving up easily in the first season under new head coach Ron Fogarty and, as they showed by 125 minutes this weekend, are still competing at a pretty intense level.
Going down 1-0 in the first on a short-handed goal didn't rattle the Tigers and they spent the final 45 minutes of the game giving the Saints all they could handle.
Junior Kyle Rankin had just skated into the zone and whipped a shot that went just wide of the net. Freshman Joe Grabowski handled the puck at the left point but his pass got picked off by Patrick Doherty and he wheeled down the ice for the goal at 9:47 of the first period.
The line of Mike Ambrosia-Rankin-Ryan Siiro had another great night, with all three contributing on Princeton's goal at 12:49 of the second. The Tigers were cycling the puck well through the man advantage and after a drive from sophomore Tommy Davis at the right point, both Rankin and Siiro had whacks at the puck before Ambrosia called for it on the right side and he roofed the puck over the shoulder of Kyle Hayton.
Senior Tucker Brockett came thisclose to winning the game just 58 seconds into overtime and after official review it was waved off as Hayton had covered up before the puck crossed the line. On the other end sophomore Colton Phinney made a huge save on Joe Sullivan and added three more to help earn his team the point. He finished the night with 34 saves, for a weekend total of 52.
Hayton stopped 21, including three in the overtime session.
Princeton was 1 for 4 on the power play, while St. Lawrence was 0 for 4.
Princeton hosts Brown & Yale next weekend, the final home weekend of the 2014-15 season.
