Women's Squash Caps Thrilling Weekend With 5-4 Third-Place Win Over Penn
February 15, 2015 | Women's Squash
Junior Rachel Leizman, who fought off a match ball in the fifth game against Harvard two seasons ago to help push Princeton to the 2013 Ivy League title, won the biggest match of Sunday afternoon in Boston. Weather delays forced the third-place match to later in the afternoon, so it was played in two shifts, and Leizman found herself in a crucial position during the final matches.
It wouldn't be easy against Penn's Michelle Wong, and Leizman again needed to fight off a match ball at 12-11 in the fifth. She won that point, and after Wong fought off a match ball of her own, Leizman clinched the fourth point for Princeton with a 15-13 victory in the fifth.
That opened the door for freshman Olivia Fiechter, who defeated Yan Tin Tan in four games to clinch the team victory for Princeton.
The first shift turned out to be a 2-2 split, with Princeton getting wins at both the No. 2 and No. 4 spots. Sophomore Maria Elena Ubina continued her perfect season at the No. 2 spot with a 3-0 win over Anaka Alankamony; one season after losing twice to her Penn rival, Ubina has gone 2-0 over Alankamony and won all six games.
Senior captain Alex Lunt, in her final team match for the Tigers, added a 3-1 victory over Melissa Alves for Princeton's second win.
Penn got victories at the No. 6 and No. 8 positions, but Princeton was able to regain a lead when junior Alexandra Toth defeated Leslie Gill in three games. Leizman followed up with her win at the fifth spot, and Fiechter finished the Quakers off.
Princeton will now focus on the individual championships in two weeks; for the first time, those championships will be held at the Jadwin Squash Courts. There is potential history to be made in the women's draw, as Harvard senior Amanda Sobhy is trying to become only the second woman to win four collegiate individual championships.
The first woman was Gail Ramsay, the Princeton coach that will have a very satisfied trip back from Boston Sunday night.
