PRINCETON, N.J. – Scoring early and often, the No. 16 Princeton University women's basketball team cruised to a 70-31 victory over Dartmouth College at Jadwin Gymnasium.
Holding an 18-point lead at the intermission, the Tigers scored the first 12 points of the second half to blow the game open. Extending its Ivy League record start to 24-0 (8-0 Ivy), Princeton improved to 12-4 against the Big Green under eight-year head coach Courtney Banghart. Banghart now stands just one victory shy of tying Joan Kowalik for the most coaching wins (163) in program history.
Alex Wheatley led all scorers, pouring in 20 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Annie Tarakchian flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 11 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. Michelle Miller was the only other Tiger in double figures with 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
Trailing 5-2 in the early going after a Lakin Roland three, Princeton ripped off a 13-2 run. Blake Dietrick got the stretch started with a layup before Amanda Berntsen converted a three-point play the old fashioned way. After Dietrick and Dartmouth's Milica Toskovic traded baskets, Wheatley netted four straight points to make it 15-7 with 14:12 on the clock.
Following a Roland free throw on the Big Green's ensuing possession, the Tigers reeled off seven unanswered to build a 14-point cushion. Miller sparked the run with a jumper at 11:50 before Taylor Williams connected down low. Tarakchian capped off the spurt with a triple from the top of the key to make it 22-8.
Still up by 14 inside of the four-minute mark, Miller knocked down three consecutive jumpers to give the Tigers' their largest lead of the period at 30-10. Surrendering the fewest points in a half (12) this season, the Tigers limited Dartmouth to 17.4 percent (5-29) shooting in the first 20 minutes, which included a 14.3 percent (1-7) clip from long distance.
Down 30-12 at the intermission, things didn't get any easier for Dartmouth as Princeton netted the first 12 points of the second period, eight of which coming on the fastbreak. Helping to spearhead the Tigers' run, Wheatley had six points in the first 1:59 of the frame.
Recording its first points of the period on a Toskovic free throw at 16:32, Dartmouth did not register a second half field goal until the 8:42 mark of the period. Andi Norman's triple inside of the nine minute mark snapped an 11:24 field goal drought for the Big Green dating back to the waning moments of the opening frame.
Up by as much as 42, Princeton held Dartmouth to just 18.9 percent (10-53) shooting. Pulling down a season-high 53 rebounds, the Tigers finished with a +32 differential on the glass, while holding a 42-8 edge in points in the paint and 12-2 advantage in second change points. Shooting 51.7 percent (31-60) from the floor, Princeton netted 14 points off 19 Big Green turnovers.
