PRINCETON, N.J. – Eight-year head coach Courtney Banghart became the winningest coach in Princeton women's basketball history as the 14th-ranked Tigers cruised to a 67-49 victory over Yale University at Jadwin Gymnasium.
Defeating the Bulldogs by just six points earlier this season – its smallest margin of victory of the year – Princeton powered past its Ivy rival Friday night, leading by as much as 32. Extending their Ivy League record start to 26-0 (10-0 Ivy), the Orange & Black tied a school record for victories in a single season (26) set in 2009-10.
Recording her 164th career win, Banghart passed Joan Kowalik for the most coaching victories in program history. With a 164-66 overall record, Banghart has recorded a .713 winning percentage in her eight seasons. During her tenure, the Tigers have posted an 88-17 record in league play, capturing four conference championships.
Blake Dietrick paced the Princeton attack with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Playing 33 minutes, Dietrick also collected five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Annie Tarakchian was the only other Tiger in double figures with 16 points and six boards on 7-of-9 shooting.
Jumping out to a fast start, Princeton netted 11 of the game's first 13 points. Dietrick got the stretch started, scoring seconds after Alex Wheatley won the opening tip.
Following a Whitney Wykoff jumper on the other end, Tarakchian buried a three from the right wing to make it 5-2. After knifing into the paint for two more, Tarakchian forced a steal and ignited a fastbreak that resulted in an uncontested Dietrick layup. Amanda Berntsen capped off the spurt with a basket at 14:27 that made it 11-2.
Momentarily putting the brakes on the Tigers' run, Yale's Emmy Allen converted a three-point play the old-fashioned way. Princeton responded with seven unanswered over the next 1:13. Tarakchian sparked the burst with a bucket inside of the 14-minute mark before Dietrick went coast-to-coast for two. The senior then drained a three-pointer from the left side to up the margin to 18-5.
Up 11 with less than two minutes remaining in the half, Princeton came up with five straight points. Dietrick got things started with a layup before Berntsen spotted up for an open jumper from the right side. Mariah Smith wrapped up the scoring by connecting on 1-of-2 free throws to give the Tigers a 34-18 lead at the intermission.
Wasting little time getting back on the board, Dietrick drove the lane for two on Princeton's first possession of the second half. After going 1-for-2 from the charity stripe, Berntsen finished in the paint with contact before completing the three-point play to pad the cushion. Putting back a Wheatley miss, Tarakchian extended the lead to 24 before Dietrick drained a triple to make it 45-18.
Up by as much as 32 with 13 minutes remaining in regulation, Princeton connected on 44.8 percent of its field goal attempts, while holding Yale to a 31.5 shooting percentage. Claiming a 40-34 rebounding edge, the Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 40-16 in the paint and 22-12 in second chance points.
