PRINCETON, N.J. – Michelle Miller posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the No. 18 Princeton University women's basketball team to a 75-47 victory over Cornell University.
Extending their Ivy League record start to 21-0 (5-0 Ivy), the Tigers matched a program-best mark of 21 consecutive victories set during the 2009-10 season. Winning by double-digits in all but one of its contests, Princeton has held a lead of at least 20 points in all but three of its outings.
Logging 28 minutes, Miller was 6-of-10 from the field and 1-of-2 from three-point range. Alex Wheatley had 14 points and eight rebounds while Taylor Williams hit four of her five shot attempts en route to 10 points. Playing 21 minutes, Williams also added four blocks and four boards.
Racing out to a fast start, Princeton netted the game's first eight points. Wheatley opened up scoring with a basket on the Tigers' first possession before a pair of Blake Dietrick and Amanda Berntsen layups stretched the margin to six. Vanessa Smith capped off the run with a bucket at the 14:26 mark of the frame.
Netting Cornell's first points, Nia Marshall connected down low inside of the 14-minute mark. Battling back, the Big Red pared the deficit to five midway through the period, but Princeton answered with a 14-2 run to open up a 17-point cushion.
Berntsen got things started with a layup at 10:13 before Wheatley knocked down a jumper to make it 20-11. Five-straight Miller points extended the lead to 14 before a Wheatley bucket staked the Orange and Black to a 27-11 edge. After a Nicholle Aston basket at 7:33, Miller converted a three-point play the old-fashioned way to put Princeton up 30-13 with 6:43 left in the half.
Ahead 35-17 at the intermission, Dietrick put Princeton up 21 with a three-pointer from the top of the key. Holding onto a 44-27 lead after a Maddie Campbell layup at 16:33, the Tigers held the Big Red without a field goal for a span of five-plus minutes, outscoring Cornell 14-4 during that span.
Five different Princeton players scored during the run as the Princeton lead swelled to as much as 32 with 4:23 to play. Shooting 55.9 percent (33-59) for the game, the Tigers knocked down 58.1 percent (18-31) of their shot attempts in the final 20 minutes.
Turning in another strong defensive effort, Princeton limited Cornell to just 34.9 percent (22-63) shooting. Holding a 42-29 rebounding edge, the Tigers outscored the Big Red 42-28 in the paint.
