BATON ROUGE, La. – The Princeton University baseball team fell to 0-3 on the young season after dropping both games of a doubleheader to No. 4 Louisiana State University at Alex Box Stadium.
Suffering a 7-2 setback in the first game of the twinbill, the Tigers dropped the nightcap, 15-4. Princeton returns to action next weekend (Mar. 6-8) with a four-game set against UNC-Greensboro.
GAME 1: NO. 4 LSU 7, PRINCETON 2
Unable to hold onto an early 2-1 lead, Princeton dropped the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against nationally ranked LSU, 7-2.
With the home team jumping out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a Mark Laird RBI single in the top of the first, the Tigers looked to respond in the bottom of the second. Loading the bases thanks to a pair of walks and an LSU error, Chad Powers came up with a big two-out hit, singling to left to bring in Nick Hernandez and Paul Tupper.
Princeton's lead was short-lived however, with LSU pushing across four runs in the bottom of the frame. Also stepping to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, Jake Fraley tripled to right before coming home on a Tiger miscue.
The next inning, LSU extended its lead on consecutive Chris Chinea and Conner Hale doubles. Andrew Stevenson capped off the scoring with a two-out RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the fifth.
Tupper went 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored for the Tigers, while Powers was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Hernandez finished 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored.
Luke Strieber took the loss in his first start of the season, surrendering five runs on three hits in 2.0 innings. Cameron Mingo allowed two runs on five hits in three innings of relief, while Tyler Foote tossed three shutout innings, giving up just two hits.
GAME 2: NO. 4 LSU 15, PRINCETON 4
With several big innings, LSU cruised to a 15-4 win over Princeton in the series finale. Getting to starter Keelan Smithers in the bottom of the third, the home team pushed across five runs on six hits and an error. After tacking on a run in the fourth, LSU added another five runs in the fifth before tallying four more in the seventh.
Managing just three hits over the first seven innings, the Tigers broke through with four runs of their own in the eighth. Peter Owens and Danny Baer led off the inning with back-to-back singles. With one out, the duo advanced on a wild pitch before coming around to score on a Danny Hoy base-knock to left. After Cody Phillips drew a walk, Nick Hernandez and Paul Tupper came up with a pair of RBI singles to round out the Tigers' scoring.
Hernandez was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Owens finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Hoy and Tupper combined for a pair of hits and three RBI. Smithers allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits in the loss. Freshmen Nick Brady and Kevin Thomsen made their collegiate debuts in relief, combining to pitch three innings.
