No. 10 Princeton Opens Aztec Invitational With Wins Over Pacific, San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 10th-ranked Princeton University women's water polo team opened play at the Aztec Invitational with a pair of wins over No. 15 University of the Pacific and No. 20 UC-San Diego.
The Tigers began the day with a 10-5 win over Pacific before edging out San Diego, 10-9. Princeton returns to action on Sunday, Mar. 15 against No. 8 Hawaii and host No. 12 San Diego State.

Jumping out to a 3-1 lead, Princeton netted all four goals in the second period to take a 7-1 margin into the intermission. Pacific netted three of the four goals in the third quarter, but the Tigers closed out the game with a 2-1 scoring edge in the final frame.
Haley Wan paced the Orange and Black with three goals, two assists and two steals, while going 3-1 on sprints. Ashley Hatcher and Pippa Temple had two goals and an assist apiece, while Jessie Holechek posted two goals and three assists. Chelsea Johnson accounted for the Princeton's other score.
Getting the start in net, Ashleigh Johnson made six stops in the first eight minutes. Turning away a pair of tries in the second period, Johnson tacked on seven saves in the third. Making a final save in the fourth before giving way to Helena van Brande, Johnson finished with 16 stops. Van Brande made three saves in the final 4:50.

Princeton extended its win streak to 14 games with a hard-fought 10-9 win over UC-San Diego. Racing out to a fast start, the Tigers built a 5-3 lead at the intermission.
Storming back, UCSD accounted for six of the nine goals in the third to take a 9-8 lead. Coming from behind the Orange and Black netted the only two scores in the final frame to escape with the win.
Finding the back of the net on two of her five shots, Taylor Dunstan finished with two goals and two steals. Morgan Hallock also had a pair of scores, while Chelsea Johnson had two goals and two drawn ejections. Ashley Hatcher, Sydney Cheong, Pippa Temple and Kimi Klein each chipped in with a goal.
Haley Wan dished out a team-high five assists, while Temple drew a pair of ejections and recorded the Tigers' lone block. Camille Hooks and Cheong each forced a pair of UCSD turnovers.
Playing all 32 minutes in net, Ashleigh Johnson made eight saves. Making four stops in the first eight minutes, she had two saves in the second period. After being unable to record a stop in the third, Johnson regrouped in the final frame, making two saves while keeping UCSD off the board to help seal the win.
