FORTUNE'S 50 GREATEST WORLD LEADERS
PRINCETON, N.J. – After guiding the 13th-ranked Princeton University women's basketball team to an Ivy League record 31-1 mark, head coach Courtney Banghart has been named to Fortune's Magazine's list of the world's 50 greatest leaders.
Checking in at No. 43, Banghart joined a group of men and women that includes elected government officials, CEOs, chiefs of NGOs, clergy, coaches, athletes and artists, who have been judged on their leadership within their professional domains, industries or fields of service or governance.
In addition to earning a spot on the magazine's second annual list, Banghart will attend Fortune's Most Powerful Women dinner in New York City on Monday, May 18. The annual event is part of Fortune's “Most Powerful Women Evening With…” series, held in several cities to celebrate global women leaders.
Among those attending the Fortune dinner series in recent years are Tory Burch, Xerox CEO Ursula Burns, Chelsea Clinton, Ariel Investments President Mellody Hobson, CBS This Morning co-anchor Gayle King, Clinique Global Brand President Jane Lauder, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, philanthropist Petra Nemcova, UN Ambassador Samantha Power and Martha Stewart.
The winningest coach in Princeton women's basketball history, Banghart has amassed a 169-67 (.716) overall record in her eight seasons. Inheriting a program that had never made an NCAA Tournament appearance, Banghart has guided the Tigers to five Ivy championships in the last six seasons.
Going 92-17 in conference play during that span, the Tigers have represented the league in five of the last six NCAA Tournaments, becoming the just the second Ivy program to secure an NCAA win with an 80-70 victory over ninth-seeded Green Bay this season. The Tigers' No. 8 seed in 2014-15 was the highest-ever for an Ivy team.
Princeton's No. 13 ranking in both the Associated Press Top-25 and USA Today Coaches polls are the highest in conference history. The unanimous choice for the league's inaugural Coach of the Year award, Banghart is also one of four finalists for the Naismith Trophy Coach of the Year honor, joining Florida State's Sue Semrau, Connecticut's Geno Auriemma and South Carolina's Dawn Staley.
