PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University baseball team fell to 1-3 in Ivy League play after dropping both games of a Monday doubleheader against Yale.
Suffering a hard-fought 2-1 setback in the first game of the twinbill, the Tigers fell in the nightcap, 8-3. Princeton (4-17) returns to action this coming weekend with a pair of conference doubleheaders against Harvard and Dartmouth on Apr. 4-5.
GAME 1: YALE 2, PRINCETON 1
Threatening in the top of the first, Richard Slenker stole second with two outs. Eric Hsieh looked to bring in the game's first run with a single to left, but Paul Tupper came up firing. Cutting off the throw at the edge of the infield grass, Billy Arendt beat Slenker with the relay at the plate to end the inning.
Looking to get the Tiger offense going in the bottom of frame, Danny Hoy singled to left center with one out. Advancing to second on a wild pitch, Hoy moved to third on a Zack Belski groundout. Peter Owens followed with an infield single to short, staking the Tigers to a 1-0 lead.
Hoping to break through in the top of the fifth, Yale put runners on second and third thanks to a hit batsman and an Andrew Herrera double down the leftfield line. After Princeton starter Keelan Smithers walked Nate Adams to load the bases, he got Green Campbell to pop up to short for the second out. Working out of the jam, Smithers then struck out Harrison White to end the threat.
Leading off the Yale sixth, Slenker hit a comebacker to the mound that ricocheted off of Smithers' glove. Moving to second on a Hsieh grounder, Slenker came around to tie the game on a David Toups base-knock to right.
Still tied with two outs in the top of the seventh, Smithers hit Tom O'Neill, who stole second. Campbell followed with a double to center, just beyond the grasp of a diving Danny Baer, bringing in the go-ahead run. With the bases loaded and two outs, reliever Nick Donatiello got Hsieh to ground out to second to end the inning.
Trying to jumpstart a Princeton comeback, Baer stole second with one out. Tupper followed with a single to left to put runners on the corners. After striking out pinch-hitter Blake Thomsen, reliever Mason Kukowski got Tyler Servais to ground out to second to seal the win.
Despite taking the loss, Smithers pitched 6.2 strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Ford went 6.0 innings in the win, surrendering one run on four hits with eight strikeouts.
Hoy finished 2-for-3, while Owens, Baer and Tupper accounted for the rest of the Tigers' five hits. Slenker went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Toups was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
GAME 2: YALE 8, PRINCETON 3
Taking advantage of three straight Yale errors, Princeton put runners on the corners with no outs in the bottom of the third. After Danny Hoy flied out to left, Zack Belski lifted a ball into centerfield. Going home, Green Campbell looked to have Asher Lee-Tyson out at the plate, but the freshman slipped the tag to score the game's first run.
With one out in the top of the fourth, David Toups ripped a hard single past a diving Lee-Tyson at short. Nate Adams dumped a bloop single into right to put runners on the corners. After Adams stole second, Alex Boos drew a walk to load the bases. Getting out of the jam, Princeton starter Luke Strieber got Tom Ruddy to hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Coming right back, the Bulldogs pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. After consecutive Campbell and Harrison White doubles put runners on second and third, Richard Slenker brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to right. Eric Hsieh then found a hole through the right side to bring in the go-ahead run. Taking advantage of a two-base error that started the sixth, Yale added to its margin thanks to a Tom O'Neill RBI single.
Getting one back in the bottom of the seventh, Princeton scored a run on two hits. Paul Tupper got things started with a double before Tyler Servais singled to right to put runners on the corners. Andres Larramendi followed with a double play ball to second, but Tupper came home on the play to make it 3-2.
Yale answered by scoring five runs on five hits in the eighth. The Bulldogs scored the first two runs on an errant throw to first before Campbell legged out a bunt single to third base to bring in another score. Toups capped off the big inning with a two-RBI single to right that upped the visitor's lead to 8-2.
Arendt finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Servais was 3-for-4. Tupper went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Hoy and Baer each recorded a hit. Strieber took the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits in 6.0 innings.
Yale starter Eric Brodkowitz went the distance, allowing three runs (two earned) while scattering nine hits in 9.0 innings with six strikeouts. Campbell and White each had three hits, while combining for three runs scored and an RBI. Toups was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
