PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University baseball team wrapped up its four-game set with Gehrig Divisional rival Columbia University with a pair of losses on Sunday afternoon.
Dropping the first game of the twinbill, 4-0, the Tigers suffered a 9-1 setback in the series finale. Princeton returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 15 at regional rival St. John's.
GAME 1: COLUMBIA 4, PRINCETON 0
With Princeton starter Keelan Smithers retiring 10 of the first 12 batters he faced, Columbia finally broke through in the top of the fifth. Joey Falcone got the inning started by stretching a base-knock to center into a double. After Gus Craig drew a walk, Falcone stole third before coming home on a Randell Kanemaru sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the inning, Blake Thomsen singled to left to put the tying run on base. With Danny Baer pinch-running for Thomsen, Tyler Servais pinch-hit for Brett Geren. Running on a ground ball to second, Baer stayed out of a double play, setting the plate for Asher Lee-Tyson. Bearing down, Columbia starter Kevin Roy got the rookie to chase strike three to preserve the Lions' slim 1-0 margin.
Once again jumpstarting the Columbia attack in the seventh, Falcone laced a single to center. Craig followed with a double to right to put runners on second and third with no outs. Pinch-running for Falcone, Shane Adams came home on a Kanemaru ground ball to second. After Craig scored on a David Vandercook sacrifice fly, Nick Maguire belted a solo shot to right to make it 4-0.
Zack Belski and Thomsen each went 1-for-2, while Owens finished 1-for-3. Smithers took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in 7.0 innings with four strikeouts. Going the distance, Roy tossed 7.0 innings of shutout baseball, giving up just three hits while fanning seven.
GAME 2: COLUMBIA 9, PRINCETON 1
Leading off the Columbia third, Nick Maguire singled to left. Moving to second on a Logan Boyher sacrifice bunt, Maguire came around to score on a Will Savage base-knock to center.
With two on in the top of the fourth, Randell Kanemaru doubled into the left centerfield gap to clear the bases and stretch the Lions' lead to 3-0. Maguire followed with an RBI double to center to pad the Columbia cushion.
Looking to get something going for Princeton in the bottom of the frame, Zack Belski led off with a single to right. With one out, Tyler Servais hit a shot past a diving Kanemaru at short before Columbia starter Mike Weisman hit Nick Hernandez to load the bases. Battling back, Weisman got Paul Tupper to pop out to short before getting Blake Thomsen to hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
With two outs in the seventh, Asher Lee-Tyson snuck a double inside the rightfield line. Driving in the Tigers' first run of the day, Billy Arendt singled up the middle to trim the deficit to 5-1. Coming right back, Columbia scored a pair of runs in the eighth on a two-run Savage homer to left. The following frame, Savage drove in two more runs with a single to right.
Belski went 3-for-4, while Peter Owens was 2-for-4. Arendt, Chad Powers, Servais and Lee-Tyson accounted for the rest of the Tigers' nine hits. Luke Strieber took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings.
