Watch Princeton's Open Women Retain The Class Of 1975 Cup
April 13, 2015 | Women's Rowing - Open
The eighth-ranked Princeton open crew topped a pair of Ivy League rivals Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie to retain the Class of 1975 Cup, though fourth-ranked Virginia won all three NCAA Championship format races during a windy morning of racing.

Princeton moved to 4-2 overall, 3-1 in the Ivy League, and won its 26th Class of 1975 Cup by finishing the varsity race in 6:56.8. Virginia posted a narrow overall win in 6:54.5, but the Tigers did well to hold off Harvard by less than half a second. The Crimson finished third overall in 6:57.5, while Cornell finished fourth in 7:06.4.
"The memory of Carol Brown handing us the Class of '75 Cup will stay with all of us forever," said junior Mary Ann McNulty. "The women in the Class of '75 represent true grit in the face of adversity, and no one exemplifies that more than Olympic medalist Carol Brown. Rowing was a sport dominated by men until they came around. Any female rower is eternally indebted to the legacy they left behind, and today was a huge honor."
The second varsity race bad much bigger margins at each position. Virginia won in 7:13.5, more than six seconds faster than Princeton's time of 7:20.0. The Tigers won by open water over Harvard (7:28.4), while Cornell took fourth in 7:40.0.
The fours, like the varsity eight, was a close race overall. Virginia won in 7:29.5, just about three seconds faster than Princeton (7:32.7). The Tigers topped Harvard by less than three seconds (7:35.5), while Cornell finished in 7:47.2.
Princeton also finished second overall, and first in the Ivy League field, in the B4 (8:03.9).
Princeton's only two losses this season have come against teams currently ranked in the top four, and it will continue to face a challenging field next weekend when it heads to the Housatonic Saturday to take on ninth-ranked Yale for the Eisenberg Cup.
"There is always room for improvement, and no one knows that better than Lori Dauphiny," McNulty said. "I'm fired up for Monday practice because I know that's where we gain speed."
