Day 1 of Larry Ellis Invite Sees Fast Times, Alums Back in Action and Distance

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/17/15) – Weaver Stadium was flooded with athletes this evening as some of the most elite athletes competed in middle distance and distance races, in addition to some field events, as Princeton kicked off Day 1 of the Larry Ellis Invitational.
In the final event of the day, the 10k, Princeton went 1-2 with seniors Sam Pons and Matt McDonald. Pons won the race at 29:35.78, while McDonald was the runner-up at 29:38.76. Junior Michael Sublette was sixth at 30:21.43, while former Tiger Chris Bendsten rabbitted.
Senior Mike Mazzaccaro was third in the 5k as was just edged at the finish line by unattached runner Andy Weaver – 14:05.97 vs. 14:05.98. Bendsten was seventh in the race was seventh at 14:14.30, with Donn Cabral '12 and Joe Stilin '12 rabbitting.
In the 1500, senior Bradley Paternostro timed 3:42.88 to finish in seventh place. Cabral was fifth overall at 3:41.19. The pair went 5-6 in the fast section of the race.
Another alum competing this evening was Trevor Van Ackeren '12, who was 10th in the steeplechase at 9:07.20.
In the first event of the night, freshman Noah Kauppila had the best time for the Tigers in the 800. He was 14th at 1:50.39. Former Princeton assistant coach Robby Andrews won the event in 1:46.83.
At the hammer throw, sophomore Vic Youn placed second with a throw of 58.63 (192-4). He threw over 58 meters twice, including his best throw on his fifth attempt. Freshman Gabe Arcaro was fifth at 56.02 (183-9) on his final throw of the afternoon.
The meet resumes tomorrow at 11 a.m.
