PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Princeton University baseball team closed out its four-game set against the University of Pennsylvania by dropping both games of a Sunday doubleheader at Meiklejohn Stadium.
Suffering a 5-1 setback in the first game of the twinbill, the Tigers fell short in the series finale, 2-0. Taking a break from Ivy League play, Princeton will host Rider University on Wednesday, Apr. 22. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
GAME 1: PENN 5, PRINCETON 1
Buoyed by a four-run second inning, the Quakers cruised to a 5-1 victory over Princeton in the third game of a weekend Gehrig Division series.
With one out in the bottom of the second, Ryan Mincher singled up the middle before advancing to second on a wild pitch. After Matt McKinnon singled in the game's first run, Tim Graul dumped a base-knock into right to put runners on the corners.
Gary Tesch followed with a double down the leftfield line, which coupled with a Princeton error allowed two more runs to score. Austin Bossart later doubled in Tesch to cap off the big inning.
Hoping to get the Tigers going in the top of the third, Billy Arendt legged out an infield single to short. Moving to third on consecutive groundouts, Arendt would come home with a clutch two-out double by Zack Belski. Penn answered with another run in the fifth on a Mitch Montaldo RBI double.
Princeton starter Keelan Smithers took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings. Chris Giglio tossed 2.0 shutout innings in relief, allowing just one hit. Belski finished 2-for-3, while Arendt and Danny Baer had the Tigers' only other hits.
GAME 2: PENN 2, PRINCETON 0
Despite getting a strong start from Luke Strieber, the Tigers dropped the final game of the weekend series to Penn, 2-0. Allowing just two hits through five, Strieber retired 15 of the first 17 batters he faced.
Finally getting to Strieber in the seventh, Matt Greskoff broke the scoreless deadlock with a leadoff homer to right. Tacking on an insurance run, Jonah Campbell led off the following inning with a roundtripper to right center, giving Penn starter Connor Cuff all the run support he would need.
Strieber gave up two runs on six hits in 8.0 innings in the loss, while Cuff tossed 7.0 shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out four. Mitchell Hammonds earned the save, surrendering just one hit in 2.0 innings.
Asher Lee-Tyson had two of the five Princeton hits, while Paul Tupper went 1-for-3. Zack Belski and Nick Hernandez each finished 1-for-4.
