Men's Golf Leads the Field After 18 Holes at the Ivy Championships
April 24, 2015 | Men's Golf
There are still 36 holes to play in Princeton's and the rest of the Ivy League's quest for a title at the Ivy League Championships, but after day one, the Tigers are on top.
At +13, Princeton leads Columbia and Penn by six shots and has three players in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard. Freshman Michael Davis is the top Tiger after an opening-round 73 Friday on Saucon Valley Country Club's Grace Course, standing one shot behind leader Austin Powell of Penn.
Freshman Marc Hedrick and sophomore Quinn Prchal are three shots back of Powell and two back of Davis at +3. The pursuit will continue Saturday when the Tigers begin teeing off at 10:50 a.m. on the 10th hole.
A year ago, Princeton was seventh after the first round, nine shots back of Harvard and Dartmouth. Princeton climbed to fourth place by tournament's end and has only one of the same five, junior Alex Dombrowski, playing in this year's Ivy meet. Three of Princeton's five this year are freshmen, with Davis and classmates Hedrick and Eric Mitchell, plus sophomore Quinn Prchal.
Though the Tigers are on top, they'll have to turn in two more strong days to stay there, with last year's tournament as an example. Though the Crimson and the Big Green were two rounds from a championship after the first day at Baltusrol, Columbia chopped 26 shots off its first-day score and rode that to the top of the leaderboard for the next two days, winning by 12 shots.
