Penn's top four finishers completed 54 holes in 885 shots across three days of competition at the Ivy League men's golf championship on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Princeton's top four finished 54 holes in 886 shots. The Tigers were that close to their second Ivy title in three years.
Princeton entered Sunday's play with a four-shot lead over Penn, and at the turn, after Princeton had picked up 10 birdies and an eagle from freshman Marc Hedrick on 15, the sixth hole of the day. Penn had seven birdies and an eagle, giving Princeton a seven-shot lead through nine holes.
That's where Penn heated up just a little bit more than Princeton, with its top four shooting six under over the back nine, picking up eight birdies and two eagles to counter six bogeys among those four players. Princeton's top four went six over for the back nine, and the difference over three days and 216 holes was a single stroke.
Though the Tigers' lead slipped on the team tote, sophomore Quinn Prchal had an iron grip on the individual title, tying the Ivy League Championship record with a 67 to hold off Penn's Austin Powell by three strokes. Powell and teammate Ben Cooley had powered Penn to its comeback win, as the two players had eight birdies and two bogeys between them over the back nine. Prchal had five birdies over the front nine to build his lead and then had three birdies and three bogeys to play even over the back nine.
Prchal's weekend total of 210 ties the record for a three-round Ivy League Championship event, a record Prchal now shares with a fellow Tiger, Creighton Page '05, who went 71, 71, 68 when he won the title as a senior.
The individual title is the second in three years for Princeton, with Prchal joining former teammate and 2013 winner Greg Jarmas as Ivy individual champions this decade. Prchal is the first sophomore to win the Ivy title since Penn's Scotty Williams in 2010, with Peter Williamson of Dartmouth winning in his final two years in 2011 and '12, Jarmas as a junior in 2013 and Harvard's Theodore Lederhausen as a senior last year. Prchal is Princeton's 14th individual champion since the Ivy League began staging its own conference championship in 1975.
Prchal and freshmen Marc Hedrick and Michael Davis earned first-team All-Ivy League honors, the second All-Ivy honor for Prchal along with his first-team finish in 2013 after tying for fourth. All five Tigers, all freshmen and sophomores, are able to return for another shot at the team's 30th Ivy League title next spring.
