HANOVER, N.H. – The Princeton University baseball team wrapped up a pivotal Ivy League weekend by splitting a doubleheader with Dartmouth College.
Suffering a hard-fought 3-1 setback in the opener against the Big Green, the Tigers secured a 4-0 victory in game two to move to 5-20 on the season and 2-6 in conference play. Princeton returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 8 at instate rival Monmouth University.
GAME 1: DARTMOUTH 3, PRINCETON 1
Despite a strong start from Keelan Smithers, the Tigers dropped the opener of the twinbill to Dartmouth, 3-1.
With runners on second and third in the bottom of the first thanks to a pair of base hits and a Princeton error, Joe Purritano singled to left field, plating two runs. After three scoreless innings, the Big Green's Matt Parisi laced a two-out triple to center in the bottom of the fifth before coming home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Hoping to jumpstart the Princeton offense in the sixth, Asher Lee-Tyson singled through the left side before advancing to second on a failed pick-off attempt. After going to third on a Billy Arendt groundout, Lee-Tyson scored on a sharply hit Danny Hoy ball to short.
Still down 3-1 in the seventh, Princeton put runners on second and third with two outs, but Dartmouth starter Duncan Robinson struck out pinch-hitter Cody Phillips to end the threat. Lee-Tyson finished 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Arendt, Nick Hernandez, Peter Owens and Tyler Servais each finished 1-for-3.
Smithers allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in 6.0 innings with four strikeouts. Robinson gave up just one run on six hits in 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts.
GAME 2: PRINCETON 4, DARTMOUTH 0
After Billy Arendt led the game off with a walk, Danny Hoy singled to left to put two aboard. With the runners moving to second and third on a Zack Belski sacrifice, Nick Hernandez hit a grounder to second, plating the game's first run. The following inning, Arendt came up with a big two-out base-knock, driving in Chad Powers.
Still up 2-0 in the seventh, Powers homered to left to pad the Tigers' cushion. After a Dartmouth pitching change, Asher Lee-Tyson legged out an infield single before stealing second after an Arendt pop-up to first. Hoy followed with a double to right center, plating the game's final run.
Luke Strieber tossed a gem in the win, giving up just four hits in 8.1 innings of work. Holding the Big Green to just one hit through seven innings, Strieber retired 12 straight batters from the second through sixth innings. Nick Donatiello recorded the final two outs in the ninth to earn a save.
Lee-Tyson was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Powers and Arendt each went 2-for-4 while combining for two RBI and three runs scored. Hoy was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
