PRINCETON, N.J. – Extending its win steak to eight games, the ninth-ranked Princeton University women's water polo team cruised to a 12-2 victory over No. 18 Wagner College in an NCAA Play-In game at DeNunzio Pool.
Defeating the Seahawks for the second time this season, Princeton (30-3, 9-1 CWPA) improved to 14-0 all-time against Wagner and will now advance to face Stanford in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Friday, May 8.
Staking the Tigers to an early lead, Ashley Hatcher successfully converted a five-meter penalty with 6:54 left in the first quarter. Moments later, Pippa Temple tucked a shot inside the left post to double the Princeton margin.
After Wagner twice hit the post inside of the four-minute mark, Ashleigh Johnson made a save before starting a counter that resulted in a Chelsea Johnson breakaway score. Following another tally, C. Johnson struck again, this time rattling a shot off the far pipe and in to cap off the first period scoring.
Continuing to push forward midway through the second, Emily Smith took advantage of a Wagner exclusion, putting away her second of the afternoon on the near post to make it 6-0. With the Tigers again on the power play a minute later, Hatcher rifled a shot into the top left corner of the Seahawk cage at 3:40.
Corralling a C. Johnson rebound off the crossbar, Smith netted her third goal to make it 8-0. Taylor Dunstan then found the back of the net on a long distance try to push the Tiger lead to nine heading into the intermission.
Padding the Princeton cushion early in the third quarter, Temple found an open Hatcher for the Tigers' 10th tally. Finally solving A. Johnson, Wagner broke through with a goal at the 4:31 mark, but Jessie Holecheck notched a score of her own approaching the final minute of the period to give the Tigers an 11-1 edge heading into the final frame.
Hatcher and Smith each finished with three goals, while Holechek and C. Johnson had two tallies apiece. Dunstan and Temple accounted for the Tigers other two scores, while Morgan Hallock drew a team-high four ejections.
Logging 24 minutes, A. Johnson recorded nine saves to up her record to 21-3. Helena van Brande played the final eight minutes, making three stops.
