PRINCETON, N.J. (1/24/16) - The Princeton women's hockey team ranked No. 9 in the nation returns to the ice on Monday for a non-conference game at Connecticut. It marks the first game for the Tigers in two weeks, as the team is fresh off of final exams.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
The Tigers have won their last 10 games and are ranked No. 9 in both the USCHO and USA Today national polls. Princeton is 15-4-1 on the season, with its last lossing coming back on Nov. 21 at Clarkson.The Tigers average 3.15 goals per game (8th nationally) and hold opponents to 1.50 gpg (6th). Princeton's penalty kill has been solid all season and is 72 of 77 for 93.5 percent (3rd).
Freshman Karlie Lund leads the team in scoring with 27 points on 11 goals and a team-high 16 assists. She ranks second nationally in points per game for a rookie. Only junior defender Kelsey Koelzer has more goals, with 12, and adds eight helpers form 20 points. Koelzer is third in the nation in points per game for a defender. Junior Molly Contini follows with 16 points, while classmate Hilary Lloyd has 14. Senior Jaimie McDonell, junior Morgan Sly, freshman Stephanie Sucharda and junior Cassidy Tucker are also in double digits in scoring. Senior goaltender Kimberly Newell has an 11-3-1 record with a .945 save percentage and a 1.50 goals against average. She is fifth in the NCAA in save percentage and sixth in GAA. Backup sophomore Alysia DaSilva is 4-1 with a .954 save percentage and a 0.94 GAA.
PRINCETON/CONNECTICUT SERIES HISTORY
Princeton holds an 11-2-2 record in the all-time series with Connecticut since the teams first met in 1979. The teams played a two-game series the last two seasons, with the Tigers going 3-1, winning the last three meetings.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Connecticut is 9-11-5 on the season and most recently dropped a pair of conference games to Northeastern this past weekend. In a home-and-home series the Huskies lost 4-0 at Northeastern on Friday night followed by a 7-3 loss on Saturday at Matthews Arena. The losses snapped a four-game unbeaten streak by UConn. The Princeton game marks the first game against a non-conference team since Nov. 27 when UConn dropped a 1-0 game to Quinnipiac at the Nutmeg Classic at Yale. The team is led in scoring by three sophomores. Theresa Knutson and Justine Fredette have 21 points apiece, with Knutson scoring the most goals with 13, while Fredette has the most assists with 15. Defender Leah Lum adds 14 points with four goals and 10 assists. Senior Elaine Chuli and sophomore Annie Belanger have split playing time in net. Chuli has started in the last four games is 4-9-2 with a .940 save percentage and a 2.45 GAA. Belanger is 5-2-3 with a .907 save percentage and a 2.64 GAA and hasn't played since Jan. 10.
