PRINCETON, N.J. – Michelle Miller finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the Princeton University women's basketball team to a 79-55 victory over Hampton University at Jadwin Gymnasium.
Using a 13-2 run over a stretch of 4:39 spanning the third and fourth quarters, the Tigers pulled away from the Lady Pirates, earning a 24-point margin of victory.
With the win, Princeton closed out its non-conference schedule with an 11-3 overall record and will open Ivy play on Saturday, Jan. 9 at Penn.
Annie Tarakchian buried a three-pointer on the Tigers' opening possession as the Orange and Black started the game on a 10-2 run. With Hampton cutting the lead in half, Alex Wheatley scored four of the game's next six points to make it 18-6.
Up 11 early in the second quarter, Taylor Williams knocked down a pair of free throws before Michelle Miller connected on a jumper to push the margin to 31-16. Still down 15 in the latter stages of the period, Hampton pieced together a 6-0 spurt before Tarakchian drained a triple from the top of the key to make it 40-28.
Hampton's Malia Tate-DeFreitas opened up the second half scoring with a layup at 9:19. After Amanda Berntsen and Kaylah Lupoe exchanged baskets, Tarakchian and Wheatley netted back-to-back layups to push the lead back up to 12.
Trailing 50-38 inside of the four-minute mark, Ryan Jordan hit a triple before Shaleise Boyd drove the lane for two to trim the Lady Pirates' deficit to seven. Williams answered by making 3-of-4 free throws over the final 1:11 of the frame to make it 53-43 at the end of the third.
Keeping the pressure on, the Tigers opened the final frame on a 10-2 run. On top 55-45, Vanessa Smith converted a three-point play the old fashioned way. Taking advantage of a technical foul on the Hampton bench, Miller knocked down a pair of free throws before draining a three from the right wing to suddenly put Princeton up 18 with 6:32 remaining in regulation.
One of four Tigers to score in double digits, Miller finished 6-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Wheatley netted 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds. Smith and Williams each chipped in with 11 points, with Williams going 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.
