First-Place Tigers Claim Player, Rookie Honors For Second Straight Week
October 17, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team has made a habit of winning more than just matches this season. It has made a pretty good habit of claiming the Ivy League individual honors.
Reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Cara Mattaliano has repeated as the league's Player of the Week after pushing Princeton to a home sweep of both Brown and Yale this past weekend. Freshman teammate Maggie O'Connell was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the second time this season — and the first in Ivy play — after hitting .400 with 25 kills over the two matches.
There have been 15 individual Ivy League weekly awards given out this season (Harvard's Corinne Bain shared the honor with Mattaliano this weekend). Eight of those honors have gone to Princeton, and they have been spread out over five different players. Even more incredibly, the Tigers have won each of the last three Ivy League Rookie of the Week awards — and they have been claimed by three different players.
Princeton improved its overall win streak to 11 and completed a perfect first half of the Ivy League season with 3-0 wins over Brown and Yale. Mattaliano had 13 kills, 19 digs and four service aces in the win over Brown, and she followed with 10 kills, 10 digs and four blocks in the win over Yale.
"Cara played with intense focus this past weekend," said Sabrina King, the only person to be named Ivy League Player and Ivy League Coach of the Year. "She has really impressed me this season with her ability to stayed engaged in every point. Sometimes her back court game is overlooked because of her exciting net play, but she reads the game well and consistently makes fantastic defensive plays to give us opportunities to score."
Mattaliano can join King and other program greats in the exclusive 1,000-kill club this weekend. She will enter the Penn match (Friday, 7, Ivy League Digital Network) needing 11 kills to become the 13th Princeton player to hit that milestone.
O'Connell, who earned her first Rookie of the Week award after winning MVP honors at the Rutgers Tournament, was highly efficient in back-to-back matches with at least 12 kills. She moved to second in the league in hitting percentage (.392), and she added four digs and four blocks during the weekend.
"Maggie hits at a different level than most players in this league," King said. "She takes some big-time swings, and it is exciting to see her improve with each match."
