October 27, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 11 nationally ranked Princeton Tigers continue the road portion of its Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) schedule as they make the trek to Iona (11 a.m.) and No. 18 St. Francis-Brooklyn (4 p.m.) on Saturday.
The Tigers are in first place in the NWPC with a 4-1 record while Brown also sits at 4-1. Earlier this season, Princeton defeated Brown, 11-7. St. Francis-Brooklyn and Harvard are 3-2 in conference play while Iona is 1-4 and MIT is 0-5.
In the summer, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) broke off into two separate conferences. Princeton is a part of the NWPC with the CWPA still serving as the governing body. For more information on the conference split, read the CWPA's release here.
In September, Princeton stopped Iona, 12-7 behind a balanced offensive attack that feature six different players scoring. Junior Jordan Colina registered his second straight hat trick and dished out three assists to pace the Princeton attack. Sophomore Michael Swart swiped eight passes while sophomore Ryan Melosini had eight saves in the win. Princeton has never lost to Iona in 24 matchups all-time.
Earlier this season, the Tigers dropped the St. Francis-Brooklyn Terriers, 9-8. Colina's fourth goal with 2:41 left in the contest proved to be the game-winner. His four tallies are his second most of the season. Sophomore Matt Payne posted his sixth hat trick of the year while junior Vojislav Mitrovic tied the program record with 20 saves in the win. It's the third time that Mitrovic has matched the record in his career. The Tigers are 12-19 all-time vs. Saint Francis as the Terriers have won eight of the last 12 meetings.
Payne's career-high 44 tallies and 38 assists lead a Princeton squad that has six 20+ goal scorers. The sophomore's all around game has been sparkling as well with 24 drawn ejections and 14 blocks. Colina's stellar season includes 39 goals, 27 assists and a team-high 41 steals and 13 sprint victories. Sophomore Ryan Wilson is the only player on the squad with at least 20+ in four categories - goals, assists, steals and drawn ejections.
