Maggie O'Connell Picks Up Third Rookie Of The Week Honor Following Dominant Effort At Harvard
October 31, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Maggie O'Connell became the first player to win either Ivy League individual honor three different times this season Monday when she was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, following a dominating performance in Princeton's win at Harvard Saturday night.
O'Connell, who also earned the top rookie honor following an MVP performance at the Rutgers Tournament and after a home sweep of Yale and Brown, posted a dominant performance in Princeton's 3-2 victory at Harvard in a showdown of the 2015 Ivy League co-champions. She recorded 24 kills, three digs and two blocks in the victory, and she hit .475 in the match. The win was Princeton's 14th in a row, as well as its 21st straight regular season victory.
"Maggie was outstanding this weekend and was integral in our win over Harvard," head coach Sabrina King said. "She is playing a position that she has never played before this year, and she is clearly excelling at it. The team counts on her to score points and she came through in a big way this weekend."
For the weekend, O'Connell recorded 32 kills, and she moved to second in the Ivy League in hitting percentage (.386).
Princeton, which broke into the Top 80 in RPI this week, holds a two-match lead over Yale in the Ivy League standings with four to play. The Tigers can clinch at least a share of the 2016 title Friday night when they travel to New Haven, Conn., for a 7 pm showdown with the Bulldogs. You can watch the match live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
