Ivy Champions! Princeton Sweeps Columbia, Celebrates Title, Awaits NCAA Tournament Fate
November 12, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Senior Night can be bittersweet — a celebration of four years mixed with the sadness of playing your final match.
There was nothing bitter Saturday night for Cara Mattaliano, Lauren Miller, and Brittany Ptak. After all, they made sure this would not be their final match.
The Princeton women's volleyball team, which clinched the outright Ivy League championship during a wild Friday night comeback against Cornell, ended a spectacular 13-1 Ivy League season at home with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-18 victory over Columbia. Mattaliano, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, moved over the 1,100-kill list in her final match at Dillon Gym, as she led the Tigers with 17 kills, six digs and four service aces.
Freshman Maggie O'Connell completed another strong weekend of her own; she recorded 12 kills and hit .429, while fellow freshman Devon Peterkin had nine kills and eight assists in the victory.
While there wasn't nearly the same drama Saturday as there was the previous night, the Tigers did need to dig out of an early hole. Columbia raced out to an 8-2 lead in the opener, and built an 18-13 advantage later, but Princeton chipped away at both deficits to claim the 25-22 win. They controlled play the final two sets to cruise to the win, their 17th in the last 18 matches.
Princeton won its 17th Ivy League championship this season, and its first back-to-back titles since the 1999-2000 squads, when current head coach Sabrina King was a leading hitter for the Tigers. They will make their first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2007 and their sixth overall; Princeton will learn its NCAA destination Sunday night, Nov. 27, with the first two rounds scheduled for the following weekend.
