Five Items To Watch For In Princeton's Season-Opening Weekend
November 08, 2016 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. - The Tigers get the 2016-17 season started at Jadwin Gym on Friday (7 p.m.) vs. in-state rival, Rider, before making a trip to Washington, D.C., to take on George Washington on Sunday (12 p.m.). Here are five noteworthy items to watch out for this weekend.
- Honoring the Past – Four members of the Class of 2016 will return for the unveiling of the 2016 NCAA Tournament banner before the game vs. Rider. Amanda Berntsen, Michelle Miller, Alex Wheatley and Taylor Williams along with head coach Courtney Banghart will help uncover the banner. The 2015-16 team became the first Ivy League program to ever receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
 - A New Offense – The Tigers graduated 71 percent of its offense last season. Princeton returns one starter, Vanessa Smith, to this year's squad. Smith started in 28 games in 2015-16, averaging 8.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists and just under a steal per game. The team's top returning shooter from beyond the arc is junior Kenya Holland at 38.5 percent.
 - Defense, Defense – Last season, Rider ranked 315th in the country in field goal percentage (35.6) while Robin Perkins led the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in scoring (15.2) and was second team all-conference. A strength during Banghart's tenure, the Tigers have finished in the top ten nationally in field goal percentage defense each of the past two seasons. In the two teams' matchup last year, Princeton held Perkins to just 3-of-14 shooting (21.4 percent).
 - Right Out Of The Gate - The Tigers battle their first of nine teams that went to the postseason last season in George Washington. The Colonials return five of their top seven scorers from the 2016 Atlantic-10 (A-10) title unit. Caira Washington was named to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference First Team while Hannah Schiable was a third team selection.
 - Cleaning Up The Glass - George Washington was one of the best rebounding squads in the country in 2015-16, placing first in rebounds (48.6), second in offensive rebounds per game (18) and third in rebounding margin (+14.2). The Tigers lost four of its top five rebounders from last season's team that was seventh in the nation in rebounds per game (45.0).
