Kolodzik Reached Midlands Final Via OT Thriller, But Falls 1-0 To All-America Kevin Jack In Finale
December 30, 2016 | Wrestling
Matthew Kolodzik has found late magic all year. He scored a takedown in the final seconds to defeat All-American Anthony Ashnault at Rutgers. He scored in the final minute and overtime to defeat All-American Randy Cruz at Lehigh. He scored a takedown in the final second — yes, the final second — earlier Saturday to force overtime and ultimately reach his first Midlands final.
But in the 17th match of his already impressive collegiate career, that late magic finally didn't come. Kolodzik, the top seed in the 141-pound weight class at the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, dropped a 1-0 decision to 2015 All-American Kevin Jack of N.C. State. Kolodzik is the second Princeton wrestler to reach a Midlands final; ironically, the first was teammate Jonathan Schleifer, who also dropped a 1-0 match in the 2015 finals.
Kolodzik reached the finals in a thriller. He trailed 12th-seeded Chad Red of Nebraska 3-1 in the final seconds, but he got in deep on the legs in the final seconds and finally clinched the takedown with one second remaining in the period. He carried that momentum into overtime, when he immediately put Red down for the victory. That moved to Kolodzik to 16-0 and set up a match with Jack, who Kolodzik had defeated en route to winning University Nationals during the summer.
Kolodzik had the earliest shot of the match, but Jack defended it and the two scrambled and defended their way through a scoreless opening period. The crucial period would be the second, where Jack used his length and experience to ride Kolodzik for the full two minutes. The Princeton freshman got rid of the riding time in the third, but he cut Jack with 50 seconds remaining to try for the takedown and title. As he did for the majority of the first period, Jack answered every Kolodzik shot and stayed on his feet to earn the title.
Princeton will return to the mat during the first weekend after New Year's, starting with a Friday night home showdown against nationally ranked Virginia Tech. The Tigers will open their Ivy League season Sunday at the Palestra in a road match at Penn; both will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
