Sixth-Ranked Hokies Claim 28-11 Win; Princeton Opens Ivy Season Sunday
January 06, 2017 | Wrestling
A trio of underclassmen, including fourth-ranked freshman Matthew Kolodzik, picked up victories over the sixth-ranked team in the nation, but a loaded back end of the lineup sent Virginia Tech to a 28-11 victory over Princeton Friday night at Dillon Gym. The sophomore duo of Pat D'Arcy (133) and Mike D'Angelo (157) joined Kolodzik on the winning side, but the Hokies turned an 11-7 deficit into a 30-11 victory by sweeping the final five matches of the dual.
After freshman Matteo DeVincenzo put up a good battle against the second-ranked wrestler in the country, D'Arcy grabbed a 6-2 win at 133 to even the team score at 3-3. Kolodzik, coming off the first loss of his collegiate career in the Midlands final, bounced back in style Friday, as he posted a 26-11 technical fall to open an 8-3 lead.
Jordan Laster dropped a 9-3 decision to Solomon Chishko in a nationally ranked showdown, but D'Angelo was on his game at 157 for a 3-0 win. It was a strong performance for D'Angelo, who has dealt with injuries after placing at EIWAs during his freshman season.
While Princeton held the lead, Virginia Tech was getting to the strength of its lineup. The Hokies have four Top-4 wrestlers at the highest four weights, and each scored a win over the Tigers. One of the highlight matches came at 174, where second-ranked Zach Epperly was able to pull away late for an 11-4 win over 17th-ranked Jonathan Schleifer, who returned from injury after missing Midlands.
Princeton will open its Ivy League season Sunday at 1 pm when it heads to the Palestra to take on Penn.
