PRINCETON, N.J. (2/11/16) - The 2016 Ivy League champion Princeton women's hockey closes out the regular season with back-to-back home weekends. This weekend will be exciting at Hobey Baker Rink as the Tigers take on No. 5 Clarkson on Friday at 7 p.m, and St. Lawrence on Saturday, at 4 p.m. Saturday will be Denna Laing Day as the team honors its former captain.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton has its highest ranking in a decade, coming in at No. 8 in this week's USCHO poll. The Tigers are 19-5-1 overall and third in the ECAC with a 12-5-1 record, just four points out of first place and one out of second. Princeton swept No. 10 Colgate and Cornell last weekend, en route to winning the Ivy League title. The Tigers have lost just once in the last 15 games, going 14-1 since Nov. 27. Freshman Karlie Lund is the team's leading scorer with 34 points on 15 goals and 19 assists. She ranks second nationally in points per game for rookies. Junior defender Kelsey Koelzer has 27 points on 13 goals and 14 assists and ranks second nationally in points per game for defeners. A trio of juniors: Morgan Sly, Hilary Lloyd and Molly Contini have 18 points apiece. Senior Kimberly Newell has started in 20 of 25 games in goal and has a .949 save percentage, second best in the country, and a 1.42 goals against average, fourth best in the country.
PRINCETON/CLARKSON SERIES
Princeton holds a 14-11-2 edge over Clarkson in the all-time sreies since it began in Jan. 1982. The Golden Knights have won the last five games including a 3-0 shutout on Nov. 21. That was Princeton's last loss before a 12-game win streak. Clarkson had 1-0 lead in the first before Olivia Howe scored twice in the final two minutes. Shots were 51-20 in favor of Clarkson.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Clarkson is 23-3-4 overall and ranked fourth in the latest national poll. The Golden Knights are unbeaten in the last 11 games, including a 9-1 win vs. Rensselaer and a 4-1 win over Union last weekend. Clarkson is 11-3-4 in the ECAC to sit in second place in the league standings, just one point ahead of the the Tigers. Junior Cayley Mercer leads the team's offense with 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points. Senior Olivia Howe chips in 32 points on 13 goals and 19 assists. Junior Genevieve Bannon has 29 points, followed by freshman Loren Gabel's 22 points. Eight other skaters are in double digits in points. Sophomore Shea Tiley has started in 27 games and has a 1.36 GAA and a .931 save percentage. Junior McKenzie Johnson backs up with a 3-0 record.
PRINCETON/ST. LAWRENCE SERIES
The Tigers own a 29-24-3 record in the all-time series with St. Lawrence. The Saints took a 3-2 game in Canton back on Nov. 20 with Kennedy Marchment scoring the game winner late in the second. The Saints had a 2-0 lead before Princeton rallied to tie twice in the first to knot it at 2-2 before Marchment's goal. Princeton outshot St. Lawrence 27-24.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
St. Lawrence is 14-11-5 overall and is sixth in the ECAC standings with an 8-6-4 record and 20 points, five back from Princeton. The Saints have lost just one game in the last eight games, going 3-1-4 including a 2-0 win with Union and a 1-1 tie with Rensselaer. Junior Brooke Webster is the team's leading scorer with 28 points on nine goals and a team-best 19 assists. Sophomore Kennedy Marchment has scored a team-high 10 goals and adds 15 assists for 25 points. Senior Amanda Boulier leads the defenders in scoring with 22 points, while Justin Reyes leads the rookies with 13. The Saints have utilized three netminders this season. Freshman Grace Harrison is 4-3-5 with a .913 save percentage and a 2.16 GAA. She has gotten the start in each of the last eight games. Freshman Sonjia Shelly is 5-6 with a .901 save percentage and a 2.86 GAA.
