• To call Friday's game pivotal is an understatement. A Yale win puts the Bulldogs at 9-0 and the Tigers at 6-2 with no more games between the teams. A Princeton win puts Yale at 8-1 and the Tigers at 7-1, meaning that if Princeton wins out, it is guaranteed at least a playoff against the Bulldogs.
• Princeton has already won as many games this year as it did all of last season, with 16. Saturday's win at Columbia was Mitch Henderson's 90th at Princeton, two behind his mentor at Northwestern and head and assistant coach at Princeton, Bill Carmody, who achieved 92 wins from 1996-2000.
• Princeton has had an equal or better record from the first half to the second half of the Ivy season in all four years under Mitch Henderson. In 2012, The Tigers were 4-3 in the first go-round and 6-1 in the second. In 2013, the team was 5-2 in each half. In 2014, the team struggled to a 2-5 start before going 6-1 in the back half. Last season, the team was 4-3 over the first seven and 5-2 over the last seven.
• A win Friday night would equal the Tigers' longest single-season Ivy win streak under Henderson at five games. The Tigers won the final five Ivy games of the 2014 season.
• For those looking far, far ahead, only twice in Ivy history, even with all the years that Penn and Princeton dominated the league, have two teams finished at 13-1 with those two teams splitting the series. The first time was in 1959, when Dartmouth beat Princeton in Hanover and six days later, Princeton beat Dartmouth in Dillon Gym. The other time was in 1981, when Princeton beat Penn in Jadwin early in the league season and Penn beat Princeton less than a month later at The Palestra.
• The 1959 Princeton-Dartmouth game was also the last time two teams came to Princeton with one or fewer combined Ivy losses this late in the calendar. Dartmouth was 11-0 and Princeton was 10-1, but the Tigers came out with an 83-67 win six days after losing 71-59.
• The last time a team came into Jadwin this late in the calendar with an unbeaten Ivy record was in 2008, when Cornell completed its 14-0 league season. That was also the last time a team ran the table in the Ivy.
• Princeton is 2-2 against Yale in Jadwin under Mitch Henderson, winning in 2012 and 2014 and losing in 2013 and 2015. The Tigers are aiming for that even-year pattern to hold.
• Princeton is in its best position at the halfway mark since the Ivy title season of 2011, when Princeton was 7-0 at the turn. Princeton's best standing seven games into the Ivy season since then was in 2013, when the Tigers, at 5-2, went on to lead the Ivy race entering the final weekend. Unlike 2013, however, Princeton is 6-1 with five of its final seven games at home. That year, Princeton built its 4-1 Ivy start before enduring seven of the last nine games on the road.
• The Bulldogs were 11 of 19 from 3-point range in the Jan. 30 meeting in New Haven, making 8 of their first 10 tries from distance to build a 48-34 lead early in the second half before Princeton mounted its comeback try. The Bulldogs, who had made more than nine 3-pointers only once all season before that game, were able to carry their hot streak into the following weekend, going 10 of 18 against Columbia and 12 of 23 against Cornell, also at home. Yale cooled off on the road last weekend, going 6 of 15 at Dartmouth and 3 of 11 at Harvard. That home-road split has been true on the season overall. At home, Yale shoots .444 from 3 (83 of 187 in 10 games) while shooting .323 (65 of 201 in 12 games) away from Lee.
• Yale sophomore guard Makai Mason poured in 22 points on 5-of-6 shooting from 3 and 7 of 15 overall in the Jan. 30 meeting. Away from Lee, he's a .418 shooter from the field (.483 at home) but just a .280 shooter from 3 (.500 at home). In all, he's averaging 15.3 points a game away from Lee and 16.5 ppg at home. Mason scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half, none bigger than the 3-pointer he nailed to make it 78-72 Yale with 66 seconds to go. Princeton scored on just one of its final three possessions after that shot as Yale held on, 79-75.
• The starters had almost all the impact for Yale in the first meeting against Princeton, scoring 76 of the 79 points and taking 51 of the 53 field goal tries while playing 155 of the 200 minutes. Yale started the same five (Justin Sears, Brandon Sherrod, Jack Montague, Makai Mason and Nick Victor) the following weekend as well, but Montague did not play last weekend and Anthony Dallier started in his place. Dallier played 35 minutes and scored 10 points in each of the games last weekend against Dartmouth and Harvard. With Dallier in the lineup, Yale used only three bench players - Blake Reynolds (against Harvard) or Eric Anderson (against Dartmouth), Sam Downey and Khaliq Ghani - in either game, with that trio scoring five points and playing 36 minutes against Dartmouth and scoring eight points in 45 minutes against Harvard. In the Princeton game, Montague hit three 3-pointers in 31 minutes and Dallier made two free throws while grabbing six rebounds in 25 minutes.
• In the Jan. 30 game, The Tigers shot 43 percent from the field, 41 from 3 and made 16 of 22 (73 percent) free throws while getting outrebounded by just six. Yale had more turnovers, with 15 to Princeton's 13, but eight of those 13 came from Amir Bell, an unusually high number for the sophomore guard. Bell has a 54 to 32 assist-to-turnover ratio on the season and has turned the ball over more than twice in only two games this season, the Yale game and a 3-turnover night at Cornell last weekend. Clamping down on the defensive end would help the Tigers, as Yale's 53-percent clip from the field was its seventh-highest in a game this season and its 58 percent rate from 3 was its highest of the season. The Tigers could use another iffy free throw game for the Bulldogs, who made just 12 of 23 for a 52 percent clip that was their second-lowest of the season.
• A night before heading to New Haven last month, Princeton took care of Brown 83-59 in a game Princeton led by as many as 35 points. Princeton achieved that point total while having an off night from 3-point range, going just 5 of 23 (22 percent), but made up for it by taking care of business at the free-throw line (20-22), outrebounding the Bears 41-33 and committing just 10 turnovers while forcing 20 from Brown. The Bears shot just 35 percent both from the field and from 3. If the Tigers can replicate the positives while finding their stroke again from 3, where they shoot 41 percent at home, the numbers add up well for Princeton.
• Friday's games will match the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the league in both scoring offense and scoring defense. The Tigers' 79.6 points a game leads the Ivy, while Yale's 75.9 ppg is third. Conversely. Yale's 63.4 ppg allowed is the best in the Ivy, and Princeton's 67.7 ppg is third. The teams are also first and second in the league in field goal percentage, with Yale at .471 and Princeton at .459, and first and third in the league in field goal percentage defense, with Yale at .402 and Princeton at .426.
• Yale and Princeton are first and second in the league in rebounding margin, with Yale outrebounding foes by an average of 11.3 boards a game and Princeton outrebounding its opponents an average of 4.8 a game.
• Yale's Nick Victor and Princeton's Henry Caruso are first and second in the Ivy in 3-point field goal percentage, with Victor at .500 (24-48) and Caruso just below at .492 (30-61). Princeton has two players in the top five, with Devin Cannady fifth at .455 (40-88).
• Princeton has two of the top four players in the Ivy in assist-to-turnover ratio, with Spencer Weisz leading the league at 2.8 (73:26) and Amir Bell fourth at 1.7 (54:32).
• Through Monday's games, Princeton's RPI was 41st, 20 spots ahead of Yale's at 61st. The Tigers were 85 spots in front of the third-overall Ivy team, Columbia at 126.
• Through Monday's games, Princeton was the winningest team in New Jersey over Mitch Henderson's four-plus seasons guiding the Tigers. His 90 wins were four more than Seton Hall's 86 as the next-most wins over that span.
• Princeton is 10-3 this season when making fewer than 40 percent of its 3-point tries. While Princeton is still well above .500 in those games, it has made for some more nervous outcomes as the Tigers have outscored their opponents by an average of just seven points in those games and 25 points in games where they make at least 40 percent of their 3s. That was evident in the two games last weekend, when Princeton went 11 of 25 from beyond the arc and beat Cornell by 29 points but went just 6 of 21 from distance against Columbia and won in overtime. The good news is that hot shooting games have been more common than cold lately, with six of the seven .400+ games coming in January and February and just four of the 13 below-.400 games coming in the new year.
• When Devin Cannady scored 17 points in his first collegiate game in November against Rider, it was the most points a Tiger freshman had scored in a season opener since Douglas Davis '12 put in 25 in his debut in 2008 against Central Michigan. Davis, of course, went on to send Princeton to the NCAA Tournament with a buzzer-beater in the Ivy League playoff his junior year, and Cannady, two-thirds of the way through his rookie season, sent Princeton to overtime at Columbia in a game that kept Princeton in control of pursuing its Ivy title hopes. In total points, Cannady, with 240, is just behind where Davis was 21 games into his freshman season, with 253. But Cannady is making his contributions all off the bench, averaging 21.3 minutes a game, while Davis started each of his first 21 games and averaged 31.8 minutes a contest through those 21. That said, the '08-'09 Tigers averaged just 57.8 points per game while shooting .429 from the field as a team, while the current Tigers are averaging 79.6 points a game and are shooting .459 from the field as a team.
• Princeton was down by at least eight points with less than five minutes to go in three of its first seven Ivy League games and came back to win two of those, at Penn and Columbia. In looking at the last five minutes of those three games, including the Yale contest in which Princeton had the chance to tie in the final minute, the Tigers outshot their foes .459 (17-37) to .378 (14-37) from the field, .357 (5-14) to .250 (3-12) from 3, took 10 more free throws than the trio of foes and made them at a .737 clip (28-38). Devin Cannady, who scored the team's final eight points in regulation and five of the 12 in the OT at Columbia, scored 24 of the team's 67 points in the last five minutes of those games. Steven Cook and Amir Bell had the next-most points in that span, with 12 apiece.
•. Since the calendar flipped from 2015 to 2016, rookie Myles Stephens has seen a jump in his numbers. He shot .379 (11-29) from the field in the 2015 portion of the schedule and .545 (24-44) since and averaged 1.7 boards and 3.4 points before the new year and 2.9 boards and 6.4 points since. That improvement continued this weekend, when he shot .600 (6-10) from the field against Cornell and Columbia while averaging 3.5 rebounds and 8.0 points a game over the trip.
• Under Mitch Henderson, the Tigers now have a 34-29 (.540) record in the pre-New Year portion of the schedule and a 56-22 (.718) record from Jan. 1 forward.
• Princeton has made at least half its field goal tries 10 times this season and has shot .400 or better from the field 17 times in the season's 21 games. The Tigers are 15-2 in those games (loss vs. Maryland, at Yale). The Penn game was the first and only time this season Princeton won without shooting at least .400 from the field.
• Princeton has made 10 3-pointers in a game 12 times this season.
• Junior Henry Caruso, who is shooting .552 from the field on the season, has made at least half his field goal tries in 16 of the 21 games this season. Princeton is 13-3 when Caruso makes at least half his tries and 3-2 when he doesn't. Caruso is coming off his lowest shooting percentage game of the seaosn, going just 1 of 10 at Columbia. His previous low for the season was at Penn, when he shot .273 and the Tigers pulled out an overtime comeback win. The only other time Caruso shot below .300 from the field this season was in the Dec. 8 loss at Saint Joseph's, when he went 2 of 7.
• Princeton enters the weekend as the top team in the Ivy in scoring offense (79.6 ppg), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4), defensive rebounds (28.1 drpg) and defensive rebounding percentage (.767). Individually, Princeton has the Ivy's top free throw shooter in Devin Cannady (.881) and the league's top player in assist-to-turnover ratio, with Spencer Weisz at 2.8.
• Entering Tuesday's games, Princeton was in the top 10 percent nationally (top 34) in seven statistical categories, including a national No. 2 ranking in fewest total fouls (363, UCF 358) and No. 5 in fewest total turnovers (233, Temple 222). The Tigers were also 19th in 3s made per game (9.6), 27th in scoring margin (+11.9), 28th in defensive rebounds per game (28.1), 32nd in turnovers per game (11.1) and 34th in winning percentage (.762). Individually, Henry Caruso, Pete Miller and Spencer Weisz combined for five top-250 national statistical rankings, led by Weisz's 38th-ranked 2.81 assist-to-turnover ratio.
• Under Mitch Henderson, Princeton has scored 90 points in a game six times. That's more than all other post-Pete Carril coaches combined and the fourth-most under a coach in program history. Princeton scored 90+ 21 times under Pete Carril, 18 times under Butch van Breda Kolff and 11 times under Cappy Cappon.
• Princeton's juniors (Caruso, Cook, Miller, Rayner, Weisz) have scored 939 of the team's 1672 points, or 56.2 percent. Players who are able to return next year have scored 99.1 percent of the team's points (1657 of 1672).
• Princeton has had eight double-doubles this season, including three in one game at Lipscomb, the first time that has happened in program history. Princeton's eight double-doubles this season, by four players (Caruso 3, Cook, Miller 2, Weisz 2) have already surpassed last year's five, which were all by Hans Brase, and are the most since the 2010-11 team had 10 double-doubles by three players. Twenty-six double-doubles, by the 1964-65 and 1966-67 teams, is the program record.

• Yale entered the weekend leading the Ivy in scoring defense (63.4 ppg), scoring margin (+12.5 ppg), field goal percentage (.471), field goal percentage defense (.402), rebounding offense (41.0 rpg), rebounding defense (29.8 rpg allowed), rebounding margin (+11.3 rpg), assists (15.5), offensive rebounds (14.0 orpg) and offensive rebounding percentage (.403). Nick Victor is the Ivy's top 3-point shooter by percentage (.500, 24-48), and Justin Sears (3.6 orpg) and Brandon Sherrod (2.9 orpg) are the top two offensive rebounders in the Ivy.
• Brown's Tavon Blackmon is the Ivy's assist leader at 5.4 per game and leads the league in minutes per game at 33.6, and teammate Cedric Kuakumensah is the Ivy's top shot blocker at 2.8 per game.
• Entering Tuesday's games, Yale had seven top-10 percent (top 34) national statistical rankings, led by the No. 2 rebounding margin in the nation at +11.3 rpg. Makai Mason, Jack Montague, Justin Sears, Brandon Sherrod and Nick Victor combined for 19 top-250 national statistical rankings individually, led by Sears' 25th-best 3.55 offensive rebounds per game.
• Entering Tuesday's games, Brown's top national statistical ranking was 41st in fewest fouls at 431. Tavon Blackmon, J.R. Hobbie, Cedric Kuakumensah and Steven Spieth combined for 20 top-250 national statistical rankings individually, led by Kuakumensah's 12th-best 2.82 blocks per game.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his fifth season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 90-51. Under Henderson, Princeton is 49-11 at home, 43-20 in the Ivy League, and 25-5 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 73-17 when leading at the half under Henderson. Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first four campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Leuhring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04). Henderson is in seventh place on the Princeton all-time wins list. Bill Carmody, who was a Princeton assistant for Henderson's first two seasons and head coach for Henderson's last two, is in sixth place with 92 wins. Carmody hired Henderson as an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2000, where Henderson remained for 11 seasons until coming to Princeton. Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14. Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield). |
