PRINCETON, N.J. (2/15/16) - The 2016 Ivy League champion Princeton women's hockey closes out the regular season hosting Rensselaer and Union this weekend at Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers take on RPI on Friday night at 7 p.m., and will honors its five-member Class of 2016 on Saturday when the Tigers take on Union at 4 p.m.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton needs just two points to clinch home ice for the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals.The team has a 13-6-1 league mark to sit in third place, along with Colgate (a team Princeton swept this season) wtih 27 points apiece. With a 20-6-1 overall record the Tigers have reached the 20-win plateau for the fourth time in program history - with all four times occurring under the tutelage of head coach Jeff Kampersal. Princeton is ranked No. 8 in the national poll for the second straight week. The 2016 Ivy League champions split last weekend, falling 2-1 to No. 5 Clarkson followed by a 4-3 overtime victory versus St. Lawrence. Freshman Karlie Lund leads the offense with 36 points on 15 goals and 21 assists. Junior defender Kelsey Koelzer has 29 points on 15 goals and 14 assists. Both players are ranked second in the nation, in points per game for a rookie and a defender, respectively. Juniors Morgan Sly and Molly Contini add 19 points apiece, while junior Hilary Lloyd and senior captain Cristin Shanahan contribute 18 each. Senior Kimberly Newell has started in goal in all but five games and has the third-best save percentage in the nation at .946 save percentage and the sixth-best goals against average with a 1.52 GAA.
PRINCETON/RENSSELAER SERIES
Princeton has a 11-6-4 edge in the 10-year series with RPI and won the earlier contest this year by a 3-2 score on Jan. 9. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead into the second intermission before the Engineers tallied two third-period goals. Shots were 34-21 in favor of the Tigers. The team's split the series last year, both one-game decisions. Twelve of the 17 decisions in this series have been one-goal games.
SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
Rensselaer heads into the weekend against two ranked teams needed two points to secure a place in the playoffs. The Engineers can finished anywhere beween 6-9 place and currently is sixth with a 8-8-4 ECAC record. Overall the team is 10-14-6 and is riding a three-game unbeaten steak of 1-0-2 since a 9-1 game at Clarkson on Feb. 5. A pair of seniors are the offensive leaders. Alexa Gruschow has tallied a 12 goals and adds nine assists for 21 points. Mari Mankey has a team-best 13 assists and five goals for 18 points. Junior Katie Rooney has scored one fewer goal than Gruschow to add 17 points, while classmate Laura Horwood adds 14 points. Freshman Lovisa Selander is 9-13-6 in her 27 starts in goal. She has a .936 save percentage and a 2.04 GAA.
PRINCETON/UNION SERIES
Princeton holds a strong 23-1-1 record in the all-time series with Union since the teams first met in 2004. The Tigers swept last season's series, winning 3-2 in overtime at home before a 3-0 shutout on the road. Union's lone victory in the series was a 2-1 game on Jan. 10, 2014. Princeton posted a 5-0 shutout back on Jan. 8.
SCOUTING THE DUTCHWOMEN
Union has had a rough year with an 0-26-6 record. Senior Kathryn Tomaselli sits atop the scoring column with 10 points on seven goals and three assists. Freshman Jacyn Reeves has eight points, and senior defender Lizzy Otten has seven points. Fellow blueliner Brandy Streeter owns a team-best six assists. Freshman Melissa Black has started in goal in all but four games and has a .934 save percentage and a 2.61 GAA.
