• Another weekend, another set of must-win games for Princeton in a tight race atop the Ivy League. Here are the scenarios:
A Princeton win would put the Tigers at 9-1 and keep the team at worst tied with Yale (currently 9-1, vs. Harvard Friday) in the loss column heading into Saturday's games. It would keep Princeton in position to win out and have at least a playoff versus Yale, if the Bulldogs also win out. A Princeton win would force Columbia to hope for another Yale loss in addition to defeating the Bulldogs in their March 5 meeting in New York.
A Columbia win would put the Tigers at 8-2 in the Ivy and force Princeton to hope for Yale to lose at least one of its last four games in order to force a tie. The Lions would stay on track to try and win out and force a tie with Yale.
• Friday's game will match the Ivy's top two teams in scoring offense (Princeton 79.3, Columbia 76.5), assist-to-turnover ratio (Princeton 1.31, Columbia 1.30) and 3-pointers per game (Columbia 9.7, Princeton 9.6).
• Saturday will be Princeton's senior recognition with Mike Washington Jr. as the lone member of the Class of 2016. He's played in 44 games as a Tiger with a high of 15 this season.
• Princeton has won 22 of Columbia's last 23 visits to Jadwin Gym. Columbia broke a 21-game losing streak in Jadwin with a 53-52 win in 2014. Since then, Princeton has won four in a row overall against the Lions.
• Princeton has already won more games this year than it did all of last season, now with 18 after 16 wins a year ago. Saturday's win put Mitch Henderson even with Bill Carmody at 92 wins for sixth place all-time at Princeton. Henderson is within another good season of climbing all the way to third place, with Frederick Leuhring (1912-20) at 100 wins, Butch van Breda Kolff (1962-67) at 103 and Albert Wittmer (1923-32) at 115. The top two, of course, will require a lot of seasons and a lot of wins, with Franklin "Cappy" Cappon (1938-43, 1946-61) second at 250 wins and Pete Carril (1967-96) first at 514.
• Princeton has had an equal or better record from the first half to the second half of the Ivy season in all four years under Mitch Henderson. In 2012, The Tigers were 4-3 in the first go-round and 6-1 in the second. In 2013, the team was 5-2 in each half. In 2014, the team struggled to a 2-5 start before going 6-1 in the back half. Last season, the team was 4-3 over the first seven and 5-2 over the last seven. So far in 2016, Princeton was 6-1 over the first half and is 2-0 over the second half.
• Princeton's Ivy League win streak of six games is the program's longest single-season league win streak under Mitch Henderson and longest since the 2011 Ivy title team won eight in a row. Princeton won nine straight Ivy games in 2004, another title year, and last won 10+ consecutive Ivy games in 1998, Henderson's senior year and Princeton's last 14-0 Ivy campaign.
• For those looking far, far ahead, only twice in Ivy history, even with all the years that Penn and Princeton dominated the league, have two teams finished at 13-1 with those two teams splitting the series. The first time was in 1959, when Dartmouth beat Princeton in Hanover and six days later, Princeton beat Dartmouth in Dillon Gym. The other time was in 1981, when Princeton beat Penn in Jadwin early in the league season and Penn beat Princeton less than a month later at The Palestra.
• In the game against Columbia at Levien two weekends ago, Princeton got a career-high 20 points from Pete Miller and a career-high 23 points from Devin Cannady, Spencer Weisz, Henry Caruso and Steven Cook, the other Tigers besides Cannady who average at least 10 points a game on the season, were a combined 4 of 24 from the field for 24 total points, 15 of which were at the stripe. While they were a combined .167 from the field against the Lions, the trio are shooting .450 from the field in Ivy play overall and .356 in the three games against fellow contenders Columbia and Yale.
• Princeton shot 55.3 percent from inside the arc against the Lions in Levien, and a 46-41 rebounding advantage, including 13 boards from Pete Miller and 12 offensive rebounds overall, was a plus. Getting to the line twice as often as Columbia, with 36 tries to 18 for the Lions, helped as well, and Princeton hit at an above-average rate, making 28 for a 77.8 percent free throw clip (Princeton averages .706 on the season). Despite trailing for much of the game, Princeton held Columbia to a .392 clip from the field and .320 (8-25) from distance. By game's end, Princeton had a .458 shooting percentage on the night.
• Princeton shot 1 of 9 from 3-point range in the first half at Columbia before warming up a bit after the break to hit 5 of 11 tries in the second half, but it added up only to 6 of 21 (.286) for the game. Princeton committed 14 turnovers while Columbia had just six. Columbia's Isaac Cohen, who fouled out with his team up nine and just less than four minutes to go, had seven assists without a turnover. Grant Mullins, who averages 13.6 points and 3.9 rebounds for the Lions, outperformed those numbers by quite a bit, scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 boards.
• Against Princeton, Columbia started 6-7 Alex Rosenberg, 6-10 Luke Petrasek, 6-4 Isaac Cohen, 6-3 Grant Mullins and 6-3 Maodo Lo. Last weekend against Harvard and Dartmouth, 6-8 Jeff Coby replaced Cohen in the lineup. Coby played just seven minutes against Princeton, picking up two fouls and taking just one shot. It was the first time on the Ivy season that Coby was held scoreless. Last weekend, Coby scored 12 against Harvard and eight against Dartmouth.
• Princeton's 85-56 win at Cornell two weeks ago saw Princeton just about do all it seeks to do in order to get a win. The Tigers hit 11 3-pointers, got balanced scoring from Henry Caruso (13), Amir Bell (13), Devin Cannady (11) and Myles Stephens (10), outrebounded the Big Red 38-26, had fewer turnovers by a 13-11 count, held Cornell to 36.2 percent shooting while shooting 50 percent itself, and held Cornell's big two scorers on the season, Matt Morgan (19.1 ppg) and Robert Hatter (17.3), to 22 points combined.
• Entering Tuesday's games, Princeton's RPI was 41st, 12 spots ahead of Yale's at 53rd. The Tigers were 88 spots in front of Columbia as the third-overall Ivy team at 129th. All five of Princeton's defeats were to teams in the top 53, including Miami (8), Maryland (9), Saint Joseph's (26), Stony Brook (51) and Yale (53).
• Entering Tuesday's games, Princeton was the winningest team in New Jersey over Mitch Henderson's four-plus seasons guiding the Tigers. His 92 wins were four more than Seton Hall's 88 as the next-most wins over that span.
• Devin Cannady's 270 points this season already make him the seventh-highest scoring freshman in the era of freshman eligibility (since 1978-79). Given his average of 11.7 points per game, he is on pace to finish fourth on that list with 329 points. That'd be just shor of second and third place, held by Spencer Gloger (336 in 1999-2000) and Douglas Davis (333 in 2008-09). Chris Young holds the freshman scoring record with 387 points in 1998-99. Between Cannady and Davis are Sydney Johnson (273 in 1993-94), Rick Hielscher (288 in 1991-92) and John Smyth (319 in 1982-83).
• Princeton was down by at least eight points with less than five minutes to go in three of its first eight Ivy League games and came back to win two of those, at Penn and Columbia. In looking at the last five minutes of those three games, including the Yale contest in which Princeton had the chance to tie in the final minute, the Tigers outshot their foes .459 (17-37) to .378 (14-37) from the field, .357 (5-14) to .250 (3-12) from 3, took 10 more free throws than the trio of foes and made them at a .737 clip (28-38). Devin Cannady, who scored the team's final eight points in regulation and five of the 12 in the OT at Columbia, scored 24 of the team's 67 points in the last five minutes of those games. Steven Cook and Amir Bell had the next-most points in that span, with 12 apiece.
• Since the calendar flipped from 2015 to 2016, rookie Myles Stephens has seen a jump in his numbers. He shot .379 (11-29) from the field in the 2015 portion of the schedule and .528 (28-53) since and averaged 1.7 boards and 3.4 points before the new year and 2.8 boards and 6.5 points since.
• Under Mitch Henderson, the Tigers now have a 34-29 (.540) record in the pre-New Year portion of the schedule and a 58-22 (.725) record from Jan. 1 forward.
• Princeton has made at least half its field goal tries 11 times this season and has shot .400 or better from the field 19 times in the season's 23 games. The Tigers are 17-2 in those games (loss vs. Maryland, at Yale). The Penn game was the first and only time this season Princeton won without shooting at least .400 from the field.
• Princeton has made 10 3-pointers in a game 13 times this season.
• Junior Henry Caruso, who is shooting .538 from the field on the season, has made at least half his field goal tries in 17 of the 23 games this season. Princeton is 14-3 when Caruso makes at least half his tries and 4-2 when he doesn't.
• Princeton enters the weekend as the top team in the Ivy in scoring offense (79.3 ppg), scoring margin (+11.9), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3), defensive rebounds (27.9 drpg) and defensive rebounding percentage (.756). Individually, Princeton has the Ivy's top free throw shooter in Devin Cannady (.871) and the league's top player in assist-to-turnover ratio, with Spencer Weisz at 2.5.
• Entering Tuesday's games, Princeton was in the top 10 percent nationally (top 34) in six statistical categories, including a national No. 1 ranking in fewest total fouls (394). The Tigers were also 10th in fewest total turnovers (260), 18th in 3s per game (9.6), 21st in scoring margin (+11.9 ppg), 24th in winning percentage (.783) and 33rd in defensive rebounds per game (27.87). Individually, Devin Cannady, Henry Caruso, Pete Miller and Spencer Weisz combined for five top-250 national statistical rankings, led by Cannady's 22nd-ranked .871 free throw percentage.
• Under Mitch Henderson, Princeton has scored 90 points in a game six times. That's more than all other post-Pete Carril coaches combined and the fourth-most under a coach in program history. Princeton scored 90+ 21 times under Pete Carril, 18 times under Butch van Breda Kolff and 11 times under Cappy Cappon.
• Princeton's juniors (Caruso, Cook, Miller, Rayner, Weisz) have scored 1,019 of the team's 1,824 points, or 55.9 percent. Players who are able to return next year have scored 99.2 percent of the team's points (1809 of 1824).
• Princeton has had eight double-doubles this season, including three in one game at Lipscomb, the first time that has happened in program history. Princeton's eight double-doubles this season, by four players (Caruso 3, Cook, Miller 2, Weisz 2) have already surpassed last year's five, which were all by Hans Brase, and are the most since the 2010-11 team had 10 double-doubles by three players. Twenty-six double-doubles, by the 1964-65 and 1966-67 teams, is the program record.

• Entering Tuesday's games, Columbia's best national statistical ranking was 17th in 3-point field goals per game. The Lions are also top 10 percent in the nation in total 3s made (20th, 263) and total 3s attempted (709). Maodo Lo, Grant Mullins, Luke Petrasek and Alex Rosenberg combined for 17 individual top-250 rankings, led by Lo's 14th-best 2.26 steals per game.
• Columbia leads the Ivy in turnover margin (+1.93/game) and 3s per game (9.7). Maodo Lo is No. 1 in the Ivy in steals per game at 2.3.
• Entering Tuesday's games, Cornell ranked in the top 10 percent nationally in steals per game (31st, 7.9 spg) and turnovers forced (33rd, 15.04/game). Robert Hatter, Matt Morgan and David Onuorah combined for 17 top-250 individual statistical rankings, led by Morgan's 46th-best 19.1 points per game.
• Cornell led the Ivy entering the weekend in steals per game at 7.9 and had two of the league's top three scorers in Matt Morgan (19.1 ppg, first) and Robert Hatter (17.3 ppg, third). Darryl Smith led the league with a .639 field goal percentage (85-133), and Morgan led the league in 3s made per game at 2.8.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his fifth season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 92-51. Under Henderson, Princeton is 51-11 at home, 45-20 in the Ivy League, and 27-5 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 75-17 when leading at the half under Henderson. Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first four campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Leuhring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04). Entering Friday's game against Columbia, Henderson is tied for sixth place on the Princeton all-time wins list at 92 wins with Bill Carmody, who was a Princeton assistant for Henderson's first two seasons and head coach for Henderson's last two. Carmody hired Henderson as an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2000, where Henderson remained for 11 seasons until coming to Princeton. Leuhring, with 100 wins, is in fifth place. Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14. Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield). |
