Koelzer Named Finalist for ECAC Best Defenseman Award
February 25, 2016 | Women's Ice Hockey
ALBANY, N.Y. - ECAC Hockey (@ecachockeyMWD1) today announced the finalists for the 2016 Women's Best Defenseman Award. Erin Ambrose, Clarkson, Kelsey Koelzer from Princeton and Harvard's Michelle Picard have each been nominated for the honor by the league's coaches. These three defenders were instrumental in leading their teams to some of the top scoring defenses in conference action this season.
A two-time Player of the Week honoree this season, Koelzer has sparked the Tigers at both ends of the ice. She anchored both the team's power-play and penalty kill units. The gifted defender ranked first in scoring among her counterparts in league-play averaging 1.05 points per game on 23 points (11g & 12a), while amassing 30 points overall on 16 goals and 14 assists as the nation's fourth-highest scoring defender. The Horsham, Pa., native was also second in the conference in game-winner goals, registering four. On the defensive end of the ice, Koelzer recorded 56 blocks, averaging 1.89 per game, ranking fifth in the league in blocks per game. She was recently named a top-10 finalist for the 2016 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award and the Ivy League Player of the Year.
The winner will be announced at the ECAC Hockey Championship banquet next weekend.
