Gersoff Scores Game Winner to Lift No. 9 Princeton to 10-9 Win over Georgetown

PRINCETON, N.J. (2/27/16) - Senior Anya Gersoff converted on a free-position attempt with 7.4 seconds remaining to lift the No. 9-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over Georgetown on Saturday at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Princeton (3-0) held a 6-2 lead at halftime but Georgetown (0-3) came out and had a 6-2 run in the second half as the teams sat deadlocked at 8-8 with 6:23 remaining in the second.Olivia Hompe's fifth goal of the game and 14th of the season from senior Stephanie Paloscio pushed Princeton ahead once more at 4:07. The Hoyas won the ensuing draw and Ellie McNulty was carded on the play putting Princeton down a player with 3:56 remaining. Francesca Whitehurst responded with a free-position goal at 3:07 to knot it at 9-9.
Georgetown won the next draw but Amanda Leavell caused the turnover for Princeton possession and Elizabeth George grabbed the ground ball with 2:50 to play. Princeton was content to hold on for the last shot and it wasn't until 17 seconds remained that Gersoff made her way to the goal. With a double team, she was fouled by Whitehurst and given a free-position attempt. With 7.4 seconds left, Gersoff converted on the attempt for the game-winning goal.
"The only thing I was thinking was 'do your job, do your job for your teammates'," Gersoff said about being in that moment on the arc. "I've never really been in this situation before, they only thing I felt after it went in was 'we have to get the ball on the next draw' because the game wasn't over. I have to give a lot of credit to them and they played so hard and played with that mentality that anything could happen and we weren't ready for that. I think more so anything they did tactically it was what they brought mentality. They are a great team but I always believed in my team, that we could pull it out. I know we had what it took to pull that game out."
Gersoff and Hompe each had five-goal games, with Hompe adding one assist. Sophomore Colby Chanenchuk had two assists. Senior defender Liz Bannantine had a team-high three draw control wins. Junior Ellie DeGarmo made 13 saves in her third straight win and four ground balls.
Frances Whitehurst had four goals to pace the Hoyas offense. Georgia Tunney had two goals. Maddy Fisher took the loss in net, playing the first half and making two saves on eight shots. Megan McDonald stopped three saves on seven shots.
After Colleen Lovett put Georgetown on the board first, Princeton went on a five-goal run with Hompe scoring three times and Gersoff twice, as the Tigers gained a 5-1 lead. Tunney scored with 33 seconds left but Hompe added her fourth of the game with five seconds remaining as the Tigers took a 6-2 lead into the locker room.
After trading goals to start the second, Georgetown scored twice to cut it to a two-goal game, 7-5 at 17:20 Gersoff interrupted the scoring at 13:55, but Georgetown went on a three-goal run to knot it at 8-8.
Georgetown had a slight edge in shots 26-24, while Princeton won the ground ball battle 17-15, won three more draws, 12-9. The Tigers were a perfect 17 for 17 on clearing while the Hoyas were 17 for 19.
Princeton begins Ivy League action a week from today, March 5, when it hosts Dartmouth at 1 p.m.
