ITHACA, N.Y. (2/27/16) – The Princeton men's track & field team in is third place after Day 1 of the 2016 Ivy League Heptagonal Championship. Host school Cornell is in the lead with 32 points, seven ahead of Princeton's 25. The two schools have the most qualifiers headed into the finals tomorrow, setting up once again another showdown between the two indoor powers.
Sophomore August Kiles became an Ivy champion, as Princeton swept the pole vault titles. Kiles cleared 5.12 (16-9.50) on his first attempt to out-vault Dartmouth's Max Cosculluela who reached the height on his second attempt.
Junior Greg Leeper gained the Tigers six more points with a third-place finish in the long jump. Leeper sprung to 7.22 (23-8.25) on his fourth jump, though his fifth jump of 7.16 would have nabbed him third place as well.
In his first Ivy Heps, freshman Adam Kelly placed second in the weight throw. He saved his best for last throwing a season best 21.05 (69-00.75) today - and it came on his final throw of the afternoon. Two of his other five throws were over the 20-meter mark as well at 20.95 and 20.05.
After four events of the heptathlon, senior Jake Scinto is in first place with 3,193 points, while classmate Bryan Oslin is in third with 2,894. Sophomore James Burns is in scoring position as well, as he currently sits eighth with 2,528 points.
Freshman Charles Volker and sophomore Carrington Akosa both qualified in the 60-meter hurdle final. Volker had the best time, a 6.79 while Akosa had the third-fastest time at 6.85. Akosa clocked the fastest time in the prelims of the 200, 21.92, to advance to tomorrow's final. He will be joined by junior Brent Albertson who ran 22.24 this afternoon.
In the 60-meter hurdles, senior Greg Caldwell will race for the title after winning his heat in 8.09.
In the 400 junior Ray Mennin and sophomore Joshua Freeman qualified for the final. Mennin had the second-fastest time in the prelims as he won heat 3 with a 48.39, and Freeman ran 49.82 to take second in his heat and make the eight-man final.
Freshman Christian Fryer-Davis will compete in his first Ivy League final as he advances in the 500 after a 1:05.82 today.
In the 800 it is sophomores Joshua Ingalls and Eric Schulz representing the Tigers in the final. Ingalls clocked 1:53.67 while Schulz ran 1:54.08 in the prelims. The duo went 2-3 in heat 1 today.
Sophomore Noah Kauppila and senior Luke Brahm will race for the title in the 1,000. The pair had two of the three fastest times this afternoon. Kauppila won heat 1 at 2:27.95 and while Brahm was second in heat 2 at 2:27.91.
Sophomores Garrett O'Toole and Zachary Albright will compete in the 10-man mile final tomorrow. O'Toole was second in his heat at 4:18.44, while Albright was fourth in his at 4:16.60.
Day 2 begins with the triple jump and shot put at 11 a.m., live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
